TTQ B4U Posted September 7, 2010 Report Share Posted September 7, 2010 Last week we headed out to the farm to fire off various canons from a .30-06 I bought recently to a my Glock and a few rounds through my wife's S&W .357 This week we decided to go fishing and ride the horses a bit and fire off some shots of the locals with a different type of Canon. Good times with the beautiful weather for sure. Thought I'd share a bit of the critters we saw. About the size of a chicken. Stayed low to the ground too. Never saw it hit anything though. http://www.pbase.com/timothylauro/image/128190454/original.jpg Not so elusive Barn Owl We believe this bad boy/girl lives in one of the barns/buildings on our property. We leave the doors open as we don't want to prevent it from exiting at night. Not much inside to take anyway. Enter at your own risk too as we have a lot of Ferrel cats. Pretty cool to see it sitting outside like this. No. He was sitting so compact and tight as if he were trying to keep warm. Never got a really good body shot, so I went for head shot. Great shots! What lens are you shooting with? That's quite the variety of animals you have around your place. Thanks! My walk around outdoor lens is the 100-400L. These are all hand held too. I like the flexibility of its zoom and it's sized right. The much larger real Canon 800mm is just too damn heavy to use much. I bought it for a series of events I shot for a client. Random useless info: Beginning falconers use them a lot for their first bird because they're so friendly and are supposed to have a great personality. WOW. Great info. I just pinged Google and my guess given our place is just north of Zainesville, that this beauty either escaped or was released from a hunter. He/She stayed around all day as if they lived on our property. Evidently they are popular in Ohio as a sporting bird for use by hunters. 3.1cutlass Posted September 7, 2010 Report Share Posted September 7, 2010 My guess was Harris Hawk as well. I was curious about the tail because he looks so similar to a Red Shouldered Hawk. I wasn't sure since they are not supposed to be anywhere near this area. He probably was trying to stay warm since they are a Texas bird. TTQ B4U Posted September 7, 2010 Author Report Share Posted September 7, 2010 People often look at use as idiots when we say we invested in a place so far out east in the sticks, but it's part of a family investment, has been in my wife's family for years and the land really is so peaceful and perhaps when my kids are grown up and own it, will have some real developmental value. Don't see them around here often, but they are an occasional. My brother tagged one with a Volvo semi...it took out his windshield and blasted his XM windshield mount antenna all the way to the back of the sleeper. BTW the turtles are a random assortment...mother turtles bury their eggs in fall and walk away. That's all the parental involvement to the species. We now own 48 acres as we sold 2 to my brother in law's brother Not sure who the fuck he is, but he's cool. Built a 3,000 sq ft. log cabin house on there. We're keeping the farm house for now as we use it a lot, mainly in the winter. In the end, as crazy as it sounds, I could see investing in a nice log cabin style home out here as a hunting retreat. I have the number of a great escivator who gives insane pricing... that could be cool to setup a pond for fishing etc.... There's nothing like going out in the woods and just getting away from everything and everyone. across the stress from me they are selling 50 acres (it might be 40...) for 110k and my neighbor and I have been thinking about going in together on it just so we have a place to ride our quads and such.
