pontiacfreak142
Same car as ive posted about before. the car had a bad coolant leak which was fixed (was told if these motors got to low on coolant they would stall) tried cleaning MAF and throttle plates also, but car still stalls. The owner let it idle for roughly 8 minutes then tried to move car but it stalled as she started to back up. car would not restart. about an hour later i took the car for a little drive and had no trouble getting it to start or drive down the road. About an hour after this, she went to drive it home, made it about 50 yards and car dies again. She got it to fire right back up this time and it made it the rest of the way home. Any idea's? its a 3.1 V6. dont think it will have anything to do with it, but the car does have a CAI and the air intake temp sensor is not plugged in and sitting off in a corner. Mensan
Need more input. Does it seem like a vacuum leak? Does it seem like it's flooded? Does it act differently depending on the throttle? How did it feel when you drove it? How do the plugs look? What was changed with the coolant leak? pontiacfreak142
unfortunatley most of those i cant awnser because it has not stalled on me yet. from what i could tell, it drove just fine, although it has been a while since i last drove the car. it was blowing coolant out from behind the pulley on the water pump, so it was replaced. i have not had a chance to check the plugs yet. if it helps, the car feels like its running just fine (or least it feels the same from when i owned it about 10 months ago). i just did an oil change on it recently (after the stalling issue started) and no coolant in the oil or anything. acklac7
Long story short: My lexus came with a uninstalled JDM CAI that I had to modify such that I could install the MAF sensor (JDM 2jz's come with a MAP, not a MAF). Well that didn't go over too well and the MAF wouldn't seat right. As a result the car would start and often idle fine, but once put in reverse it would immediately stall. After minutely adjusting the position of the sensor I could often get her out on the road, although she would still routinely stall/randomly bog down depending on how it (MAF sensor) was "seated". On one occasion I got the MAF seated just right and my lord, did that car take off like a bat out of hell. :bangbang: Eventually I got sick of fucking with it and put the MAF back in it's original housing, and "jury-rigged" the rest of the CAI. Haven't had a problem since. Not sure how much that helps but yea, i'd definitely take a close look at the MAF sensor. Perhaps the CAI (and/or lack of AITS input) is causing the MAF to malfunction? If you want to try and throw parts at it I would think a used MAF for that vehicle could be found at u-wrench-it for under $20, especially this time of year. And mensan I can't help but laugh everytime I see your avatar...Poor noobs lulz. Edited December 21, 2010 by acklac7
acklac7
and when did the problem start? I.E. did it only show up once the weather turned frigid? Edited December 21, 2010 by acklac7
pontiacfreak142
ill have to try that then, maybe it is just toast. Yes, come to think of it, it did just start stalling when it got cold out.
Cordell
Possibly a sticking idle air control valve, take it out of the throttle body and clean it up. Throttle body cleaner works best at breaking up carbon. If the intake air temp sensor is still plugged in, not actually being in the air stream shouldn't make a big enough difference. Still don't know the point of putting a CAI on a 93 Grand Prix, sheesh.

I bought it for the bird but the tubing was to small for it and i didnt want to waste the 50 bucks i spent on it
