1st gen s10 with the 2.8? Good gas mileage and 4x4 doesn't usually complete but the 2.8's aren't too bad at all. Not as gutless as the second gens with the 2.2

been there done that. 86' S10 2.8L V6. That truck is extremely under powered and heavy. but good suggestion about a newer 4cyl. S10.

I was also looking at an impreza or Legacy. but they are so damn hard to find and they have head gasket issues. ...

90-93(90-94 if blazer/jimmy) are the good ones. The 2.8 in my 91 has quite a bit more pep than the 2.2.

Seen this a couple days ago and you'd be able to keep some cash with it. Just sucks about the floors but looks cooler than shit.

It's really not that bad to fix.

Those are the best to buy.

That's what I was thinking, though I understand not wanting to buy something that will need work immediately.

Here's a local 93 Legacy L w. reasonable miles. Typical shitty CL ad without a pic though:

High mileage 99 Outback:

High Mileage 98 outback. Actual pics on this one (fucking CL:dumb:):

Supposedly all of these "run well".

Could always go Comanche.

Damn cooling systems.

Yeah, I guess that's more like a truck at least. Still unibody but has a bed. The closed cooling system isn't awful really but is easily swapped to open. I always talked about swapping the 90 to open if it gave me trouble but it never did.

I didn't notice that Geoff mentioned good fuel mileage in the criteria. I don't know what your current truck is, but a Cherokee may not be vast improvement in that department (~20 MPG hwy). Probably no worse than a Blazer or similar though.
