Survival theory

I've talked about this with my brother and a couple of close friends. Between everyone weapons wouldn't be an issue, also discussed how important having a bow as a weapon/survival tool would be. We have a place set up to meet in a rural area. Also figured the ways we would get electricity. Would also probably change up one of the diesel vehicles to run on different fuels. I still don't believe we are even close to being ready though. Would stock up on enough booze to last a year and making our own at a steady pace

I've only skimmed through the thread, but I saw many good points made.

I am just not looking forward to my facebook news feed filling up with similar messages of "omg the world is ending sadface" and when the internet disappears I will not have a source of updated free porn

I think the reality of this happening is so low I don't specifically worry about it.

But our typical food and water supply we have on hand would last a few weeks.

1st thing I do is worry about my partner.

2nd thing is go out to my parents (guns, people and a little more space not far out of the city).

3rd is go down to my aunt and uncles land.

My skills that I've developed to do what I enjoy will get me a long way. I just took the 2nd of a weekend long (outdoor) class this last weekend called Mountain Travel and Rescue.

Here's an interesting, quick read short story from my current favorite writer about 1 scenario.

http://craphound.com/overclocked/Cory_Doctorow_-_Overclocked_-_When_Sysadmins_Ruled_the_Earth.html

I think it's realistic if this were to happen and not like anything anyone has mentioned so far so it could be a good read to spur you crazies to buy more stuff. :lolguy:

Jesse is a true "woodsman". Just ask his girl. haha, had to say that.

I know Jesse pretty well. He's a problem solver. And one of the few people I can see being successful in a bad situation, with just the things around him. About the most rational person I know really. If it sucks, it sucks. Here what we can do, kind of guy.

Read about 5 minutes of the story and couldn't tolerate the writing style.

If a scenario like the OP hit, the entire system - or something near as to it that the differences don't matter - would be back up and running within a month.

Society is more resilient than you think.

A very wise man once said: "Anarchy is the least stable of all types of government."

And he's right.

Society isn't just a theoretical exercise in philosophy for humans. Humans are wired biologically to be herd/clan animals. We are literally built to band together.

3 - I'm not a wuss

I don't think it's likely, but I also don't know. What do you think is in place for us to be back up and running in a month? I mean the value of out money is pretty tapped right now. Can it with stand an event like discribed? Or, let's say we are back up and running, how big of an eye opener would it be to people?

What I get from this is you're mature enough to know what you need to do and have the means to do it.

Do you have real life map and compass experience?

But ya, that's the gist of what I meant with my post. It's still good to have some actual experience and a broad base set of skills in the event you would need them. There are much more likely situations where some survival skills would be helpful.

Great movie.

Great book.

Perception is reality.

Perception: A bank is financially shaken.

Consequence: People worry and begin to withdraw their money.

Result: Pretty soon the bank IS financially shaken.

/Sneakers (a great movie you must see)

Exactly. Cash is worth what we say its worth. The laws of economy are actually just psychology wearing a costume.

By "back up and running" I don't mean all the ATMs will be up and running and dispensing cash and so forth. I mean people won't turn on each other in a mass global spanning deathmatch. We are born and bred and built (literally) to be communities.

We'll help each other out. Happens every disaster: There are the looters, there are the runners, and there are the helpers/rebuilders. Guess which one ends up every time?

Do you think this would be the case if everyone was effected by the situation at the same time? All of the most recent disasters have left other people available to go out and help, what about when we all have to worry about the same thing?

any sort of world crisis that happens next will be based on fiat currency being devalued. once this process begins, i give it a week or 2 to unravel. at that point, everyone will realize they have no way to work and be paid for it. face it, the world is not setup for the barter system. example: you work for best buy. the dollar is worth nothing. what do they pay you in? nothing. they aren't setup to pay tens of thousands of employees in anything but dollars.

at that point, i believe there will be an onset of rampant crime, looting, killings, etc. here is where all you vigilantes get to play "z day" games. i think at this point, it will be too much from the world to recover from. once the trust network within currencies and nations is disrupted, its over. there is no recovery, neither nationally or worldwide. the infrastructure will be too broken to repair. its alot to grasp, but if you look at it from an economic standpoint, it will make sense.

If op was talking about a firestorm situation like in the newest Die Hard, i know there's better material to reference but its well known, its highly unlikely to happen. A virus created by even a super genius is still flawed, why, it can't think the way the creator thought so once its done with its original objective who says its going to stop or who says its not going to get confused and go rogue?

Anyways if it were to happen all i would do is get together with people and rob those who have more supply then me but less firepower, stupid gun critics. What would work is getting America together and go after, once again, a less gun happy country. There is no better time to take control of a country then when its already in panic.

Last option? accept you pending doom and get a hold of all the meth, crack, heroin, and puppies you can and smoke them in that order, you'll figure a way to smoke puppies once your good and out of everything else.

I think a few regions of the world have the type of people to help each other, but look at katrina. Lots of people with zero survival skills waiting to be helped. If no help ever came to those people what would have happened next. How long would they have waited.

generator hooked up to house---need it

first aid kit with antibiotics, anesthetic, and enough surgical instruments to do open heart surgery---check

You definitly make a good point. I think, in a broad sense i'll say a WROL situation (without rule of law) that ghetto's and lower income areas will just explode. Yeah they will sit there for a short time and wait to be rescued just like they wait for their government checks every month. Alot of these people can hardly think for themselves let alone provide and sustain themselves for a length of time. But when they realize there's no FEMA truck loaded with mcdonalds coming to save the day, its gonna get ugly.
