Bump compression vs. new performance cam?

Tomorrow I'm dropping off my Ford 300-6 engine to get rebuilt up in Delaware. The guy said that he would bore the block .030, and deck it as well. Combined with flat-top pistons (stockers have a cast valley as big as the Grand Canyon) I'm conservatively guessing this will bump compression from stock 8.4:1 to closer to 9:1.

There are only a couple of performance cams available today for the 300 Inline-6. The one that he found was a Comp Cams unit for around $400 with valvesprings and lifters. Definitely money I don't need to spend on this motor!

Will the bump in compression up the power output more? If so, roughly how much? Stock, these motors are about 120hp/245tq. If I find a cheaper RV cam for around $250 with lifters and springs, is it worth it? I'll upgrade the cast-iron "log" exhaust manifold, but I will likely keep the 1bbl carburetor intake system. Thanks...

If it had alot of miles, putting a new cam & lifters in it while it's apart is probably good preventative maintenance, even if you just put a stock one in. A mild (RV) cam will certainly make more power too and probably not cost much more than a stock replacement.

Or you could go with a moderate cam and one of these like a BAUCE:

No Clay, this will just lead you down a road you said you didn't want to go down. Do you want to have to mess with the carb and ignition? Do you really want to change it much from stock? Leave the cam alone, the bump in compression will give you a little bump in torque and just leave it at that.

i would say leave it stock. the only non-stock parts i'd add to a motor that makes 140hp would be parts to improve reliability/ longevity. if you're trying to eek more power out of a 140hp 6 cylinder motor, you're doing it wrong. especially, if you're doing it n/a

just my $.02

A) I didn't say it was the thing to do I said it was a bad price you were quoted.

B) You drove the truck I told you the problems I knew of and you jewwed the price down so low I would have told you to take a hike. My dad sold you a solid pickup at a steal of a price.
