AngryBMW
7mm Mag. All day, every day. I love that rifle. My brother has a .270 pump which is really nice also. I have shot 300 win and 300 weatherby...all fun but it all varies on what you want to spend and what you're shooting. I have never had an issue with my 7mm mag or a .30-06. I'd suggest coming out to one of our long gun meets and taking a few shots with each and see what you like. I believe we will be planning something for late March/eary April. Check the meetings section for details. -Marc

OGRE
.308 is a good accurate round, 30-06 has taken down about every animal on the face of the earth. JMO 7mm mag, you will be able to hit just about anything your eye can see. I also recomend a savage, you have to spend money to get a 700 to shoot groups like a savage does out of the box. 99ta
well, I think I have narrowed it down to a 270, 308 or 30-06. I am not really finding anything used, but I did find this http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/62_974/products_id/70972/Savage+AXIS+XP+270+CAMO+WSCP my question is, if I buy new should I get it bare and pick out my own scope? Or does this look like a good deal?

RedRocket1647545505
I have no personal experience with them, but I have heard the Axis model is to be avoided. You might do some more research on them before ordering.
koolrayz
I have a .270 that was my wifes. It has a laminated stock with a cheek piece and a mauser action. 2pointslow
+1 on .270 its a perfect round for almost everything in ohio from varmit to hog hunting.
RedRocket1647545505
I'd personally take .243 (actually .243AI, but that's whole 'nother ball game) over most anything for Ohio hunting. It's big enough for any game in Ohio, big enough for elk if you use it right, devastating on varmints, 6mm bullet selection is spectacular, not to mention 6mm ballistics spank just about everything. Or does this look like a good deal? I got one from vances in 30-06 a while ago because it was cheap and I wanted a 30-06. I was expecting a 2moa gun but was actually surprised with the group I got out of it. This is with the shitty barska 3x9 that came on the gun at 100yrds. The first group is in the middle then I adjusted the scope to the right for the second group. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k204/stangsn95gt/702f31a4.jpg
LJ
Watching a show on Outdoor channel, a small 13 year old boy dropped a cow Elk in 1 shot at 550 yards with a .270.

XChris1632X
I like the vote for .17 also. Especially if you are new to rifles. These are great little inexpensive guns to shoot with. After you master the .17 you can start stepping it up. If you go to vances, you can almost always get a savage with an accutrigger on sale. Comes with a scope (not the greatest but they let you upgrade). These are very fun guns to shoot and can be much more forgiving than a big caliber. Lustalbert
I'm not against the round or the weapons, but can you find 54R in the box stores? I'm no expert on the Mosin or PSL, but I don't see them being as accurate out of the box as a late model 700 or Savage. No hateraid. I recall my carbine being capeable of taking a telephone pole in one shot.... Box stores are light in this round, but the surplus is cheap for bulk buys, and you can get new comercial for it online easily.
