Interesing idea, as I actually get to keep the "patina" on the original paint, yet seal it off and give it a new, uniform coat of color that is cheap and low-maintenance, as well as repairable. I also get the impression that the color won't fade...Plus cleanup is a breeze, I'm assuming the VOC smell is nonexistant, I don't have to mess with primer, and rust protection won't get any better provided I do it correctly. CRed05 Posted May 2, 2012 Report Share Posted May 2, 2012 I plastidipped the wheels on the rover a few months back. Shit holds, it's easy to do, looks good, is cheap. I got the custom gun metal color, had a tiny bit too much blue in it for my liking but it works. Here's a pic I took while I was a couple of coats in. I ended up giving it like 10+ coats and it could still use some more. It's quite a bit darker now than what the picture shows. Everyone on the MINI forum blacked out their chrome trim, and everyone on the FJ forum uses it on all the silver trim pieces to match the bumpers. It doesn't even deserve to be in an econobox to begin with let alone a luxury car. I've seen similar products advertised as a means of protecting your car at track days, wasn't using the same name but I'd bet it was the same principal. Dare I try this on the GT3 to protect it from the track? ...my biggest problem is I really enjoy perfectly polished and mile deep paint. I'm torn because of this. It would protect it from most things, its pretty durable. Actually a lot of people put it on for winter to protect against salt etc. You can put it on as thick as you want. It is tough to get a rock chip in it. I had my chrome-plastic trim around my MINIs grill done for over a year, through winter and everything and it looked brand new when I pulled the Plastidip off.
