Bedlined the headliner panel in my Cherokee - Thorne Porn!

Recommended Posts

The headliner on the Cherokee has started to sag and the one on my Wife's Saturn is totally shot, so that was this weekend's project. I stripped the headliner panel, which is a rigid piece of fiberglass, and scrubbed off all the failed foam. I bought some awesome suede fabric to put on but after upholstering the wife's headliner (the one that needs it the most) I decided f that noise. I'm okay with mechanical stuff usually but I fucking suck as an upholsterer.

So, for less than the cost of the cloth I bought it's now covered in ultra-durable ultra-awesome rubber. INB4 Cool Story BRO. :p

Man that's going to smell on a hot day.

That's the only thing that worries me. I don't care much about looks in this case. It has been done before and there are mixed reviews on smell. Some say they don't smell it at all and others say you can always smell it.

With the prep work you did in getting the board ready to spray, doing a new headliner with actual material would have seen a much easier prospect at that point. Would sprayingitnow an actaul black color aid in getting a unified look and maybe encapsulate some of the smell?

I was worried about the contours around the speakers and stuff. I guess it probably wouldn't have looked any worse even if I jacked it up a little. I'm considering painting over the black with tan but I don't know. I'll probably just try it out for a while and go from there.

I need to do this to my grand cherokee. I just redid the headunit and speakers last week. I por15'd the inside of the doors then sprayed a rubber coating ontop of that.. I was planning on removing the headliner painting por15 and rubber spray then buy a need headliner to put back on. Do you suggest redoing the original? Do you know if there are replacement sound bars in the back or if I just have to replace each speaker individually.

I'm not sure if the Grand Cherokee uses the same rigid fiberglass backing plate, but it probably does. As long as you get all traces of the gay foam off the backing board you can either use the bedliner stuff or headliner adhesive and the fabric of your choosing.

I'm not sure if the soundbars in the GC are the same either, but in my Cherokee the speaker pods are molded into the backing board and there's an additional plastic tray that goes behind that, which is what the speakers actually screw into. I just ave two basic Pioneer 6.5" speakers in the pods. Some of the late 90's Cherokees has a separate board that held the speakers in that early Cherokee owners often swap in to theirs to replace the hatch speakers.

I reinstalled the headliner today. It still has a faint odor, though it's noticeably less than yesterday. I never realized how ridiculously hot the inside of the roof gets when it's sitting in the sun (it's black). SO, naturally after it has been in the sun for a while I notice the smell a bit more but so far it's not too bad. I hear it takes a few days for the smell to totally "cure out". I'll update in a few days.

It's not going to cure out when it's inside a car with the windows up. Make sure you leave them cracked if possible

Yeah, I waited 24 hours to reinstall and all 4 windows are cracked now. I have vent visors, so they are cracked most of the time anyway.

Overall the look is growing on me. Just waiting to see what happens to the smell.

If mine ever falls I planned on putting suede or something similar on it. I will pass on bedliner

When my old Disco 2 had saggy liner going on I was going to paint it black too because a) It's much easier and b) I saw this picture and it looks pretty good. It's no bedliner, just regular rattle can.

Much better than tan suede.

I ended up saying fuck both those ideas and just sprayed some glue on it :dumb:

LR3 = No saggy liner :fuckyeah:

I actually don't mind the contrast of the black and tan. I thought I'd like the textured look better than smooth, but really I'm not sure I like either texture any better/worse. I'm definitely not going to bother painting this tan to match.

ohh you have a limited.

Yeah. It's an oddly optioned Limited, but in exactly the way I wanted.

- No ABS, which means it has a 29 spline 8.25 instead of the Dana 35

- Selec-Trac transfer case - 2WD, Part-Time and Full-Time 4x4

- It has no overhead console

- has heated leather seats

- 16" Alloys

- Tow package, which is really just a hitch with a built-in dual-function plug and is prewired for a trailer brake controller

And now it has this SWEET custom headliner... :gabe:
