650 hp 5.0-Kenne Bell style!

We recently made a few changes to our shop car. The previous setup was Roush TVS supercharger running roughly 10.5 lbs of boost. Let me start by saying that the TVS is an absolute fantastic blower and the car was very fun and made great power on that setup but Kenne Bell recently gave me the opportunity to step up to a 2.8LC kit for the car so we took full advantage of it. The main reason for the change was simply the fact that the Kenne Bell kit is very similar across the Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro platforms and since the car will be sitting in our showroom all winter, it is the perfect conversation piece and allows us to demo the kit across multiple platforms.

 

So with 19k miles on the clock, supercharger #2 makes its way onto our shop car.

At first glance, the 2.8L Kenne Bell unit is much larger than the 2.3L TVS

Here is a comparison to the underside of each blower. The 2.8 also has a much larger discharge area than the TVS

The intake manifolds are also quite different. The KB uses a much shorter runner than the TVS which helps a bit up top with high rpm horsepower. The KB manifold is also designed to direct the discharged air across the intercooler.

We also opted to add Kenne Bell's 168mm throttle body to the car. Pictured from top to bottom is the KB 168mm, the GT500 tb, and the stock 5.0 tb.

I also had them send us a 14 psi pulley. I will probably put it on eventually but I think this is plenty of power for the stock block for now....

 

In addition to the added power, we also added a set of Roush side splitters and tig welded a new larger diameter set of tips onto the stock mufflers. (what can I say....I like the car quiet)

Very nice. How does the throttle react compared to stock with that great big single blade? Well not really an apples to apples comparison, but that thing is huge.

 

It actually drives really really well. Much better than I expected actually. It does require a bit higher idle rpm than I would like but thats the trade off with a blade that large.

You average 17mpg in that thing? Fuck me, my car averages 15mpg and ain't got nothing on that.

 

That was with the old TVS setup with 3.55 gears and doing a mix of highway/city driving with mostly highway. I did recently drive the car up to Michigan and got an average of 24 on the highway cruising at about 70 or so. It really doesnt do that bad. I drive the car virtually any day it is not raining out.

Can you post a graph of the two blowers over laid? Just want to see how they compare. Obviously the 2.8 should make more power, just curious on the low to mid range torque. I bet that is a really fun car too.

 

Yeah, I can do that. Ill try to remember to do that tomorrow. The KB is a touch softer down low but then carries on further above 6k.

 

I want a ride too...can you fit a kid comfortably in the backseat?

 

Lol. Yeah, I have 2 car seats in the back of the car right now. How big of a kid are we talking? Lol

Where are the vids!

 

Unfortunately I didnt get any. We have been so hammered lately that I actually ended up staying after hours on a saturday and finishing the car up on a sunday when we were closed so that we could get it done and get the road testing done before the weather breaks. Im sure I will eventually pop it back on the dyno and get some videos done...

That is about what I expected. Now crank that 2.8 up......and let me sit shotgun :)

 

Lol....Yeah, the 2.8 is barely being spun right now. I will eventually turn it up more. The long term plan is to just build a nasty motor for the car but for now I plan to just keep pushing the stock motor in it.

 

99% of people that do this stuff will do it on the stock block. So making sure things hold up and will last is helpful for us as well as our customers. Every customer that comes in that we do a blower for, we typically will sit down with and lay out a game plan as well as what the risks and required mods are at the power levels in question. So pushing ours and constantly monitoring things is very, very helpful. This is the original stock motor in the car. The only thing that has been changed is that I swapped the stock oil pump gears for a set of billet gears since the stockers are known to stress fracture and crack which has the potential to take the motor out if that does happen. The car has 19k miles on it so far. 4k were naturally aspirated with a bunch of drag passes on the car. The last 15k were supercharged. 2k of those miles were at the 580 rwhp range, 13k at the 615 rwhp range, and it had 5 passes at the Texas mile between 170-180 mph at the 640 rwhp range on race gas. Ill run it at this level for a while before pushing it just so I can collect data and we can see how well everything holds up at this power level. So far I have broke the driveshaft, seperated the stock pressure plate from the flywheel, and broke the limited slip in the car, so it has not had an easy life.... Just as important as the power is the driveability and reliability of the car at those power levels. I do have 2 more smaller pulley's for the blower sitting ready to go on but I will probably put another 10-12k miles on the car at this power level before going that route.
