Most F1 teams are launching their 2013 cars in the next couple of weeks, and usually get inundated with pics, comaparisons, etc from sites, friends, etc.

First to launch was Lotus with their E21 Chassis. Alot of teams are doing it live via YouTube streaming feed. Kimi was interviewed and actually gave answers :lolguy:

Not to mention someone had a funny sense of humor and redesigned Kimi's steering wheel for him

Bernie decided to re-write the rules for this year which would allow for the 'step nose' to go away, but Lotus decided to keep what they had.

Today was McLaren-Mercedes Turn to launch......Now last year, Mercedes was one of the only 'front runners' that didn't use the 'step nose' and still did exceptionally well in the drivers and contructors fight. They decided to stay with that look for this year too. With Hamilton going to the Mercedes, that left an open seat at McLaren which was filled by the up and coming Sergio Perez. Jenson has moved to the #1 driver position.

McLaren is claiming this car is a significant redesign of 2012’s challenger. Following 2013’s new regulations, the nose of the MP4-28 features a “vanity panel,” designed to hide the unattractive nose of last season’s car. The overall look of the car, though, isn’t a huge departure from last season.

Dictated by regulations, the engine of the MP4-28 is a 2.4-liter V-8. Power figures aren’t mentioned, but we’re going to assume it’s in the neighborhood of the 750 horsepower

Ladies and gentlemen....the MP4-28

Anyone have more info on the new motors?

1.6l V6 w/ Turbo (750hp and 1000nm of torque is what ive read, which is like 738 tq)

And i dont know if this is right but the turbo has a electric motor attached to it that is powered by a generator and keeps the turbo spooled up or something. May be wrong but its what ive read...

Those are the 2014 spec motors, 2013 is still the 3.0L V8. I'm assuming that's just an updated version of KERS?

Current engines are 2.4L V8......

Yes, KERS will play a bigger role in 2014 Engines. 2014 engine rules mandate a 90-degree V6 engine of 1.6 litres, with a fixed crankshaft axis and chassis/gearbox mounting points. The engine can have a single turbo charger, which must be mounted along the cars centreline. Use of KERS is extended with a greater capacity for the Kinetic system (as used currently) as well as the introduction of a Thermal Energy Recovery System (TERS). Further green initiatives are caps on fuel flow and revs limited to 15,000rpm. Despite having a smaller cubic capacity and fuel allocation, the engine will produce the same maximum power as the current 2.4l V8 engines, albeit only when the Energy Recovery Systems are in use.

Here is a CAD of the Engine Architecture:

The new tech regs are going to make things very interesting for us gearheads. The cars are no longer powered by "engines". Instead, because KERS is such an integrated part, they're now called "Power Units" in the tech regs.

At the basic level, most have heard what the core of the unit will be; a Turbo V6 at 1.6L. And as above, the RPM limit will be dropped again from 18K to 15K (up from 12K in the original proposed rules). But what's REALLY interesting is how they're limiting power from the turbo. There are no boost restrictions! Instead, they are limiting fuel flow. Maximum allowed fuel flow is ramped from (IIRC) 40 lph, to a maximum of 100lph.

Here's the kicker, the fuel tank will only hold 100l and there is no refueling in F1 now. So at full power, the car will run out of fuel halfway through the race!

Now KERS is getting a big change as well. First off, the electric motors will be able to deliver around twice the power as they currently do (around 200hp) and can be used up to 30 seconds in a single lap. Additionally, power will be able to be harvested in two ways. Through the wheels like now, but also from turbo (which is what you're seeing in the picture above) essentially harvesting heat energy from the exhaust.

I'm not sure if the FIA will allow the generator on the turbo to act as anti-lag under acceleration...

But, like the turbo/fuel delivery, there's a catch! The driver will only be able to harvest HALF a full charge per lap. So for the full 30 second boost, they'll have to go a lap without using KERS.

The changes in 2014 will mean the driver will have a LOT more to do. Not only is he dealing with piloting a F1 car which is a challenge in itself (just see the Top Gear episode where Hammond tries to drive one) but the driver will also have to manage his resources available. How much power to dial in, and when to harvest vs using KERS. Is it worth saving KERS for a big push next lap? Or use a half charge to maintain your lap time? Turn the boost up for some fast laps, or keep it low for more consistent laps?

"Yes, Yes. I know what I'm doing!"

And without delay, the F138!

Ferrari sure does know how to build an F1 car, and F138 has definitely carried on that tradition. Ferrari obviously opted to go with the additional 'fairing' piece to hide the step nose. If this pattern holds, then most of the front runners on the grid will opt for this as well. Alonso will be back in the fight again, and Massa will do what he can not to get fired this year (I am guessing this is his last year at Ferrari). This will be Ferrari's second consecutive year with a pull rod front and rear suspension, so they should have it finely tuned by now. Domenicali is very proud of this years car and he said their biggest concentration was the aero on the car, because he felt last years was lacking.

Extremely good summary of the new Power Supply regulations, you only omitted one important detail.

In 2012-2013, the KERS is not considered part of the motor and can be tampered with and replaced at will, whereas teams are allowed only 8 motor/transmissions for use throughout the season. With the new V6/ERS Power Supplies, the ERS cannot be replaced independently and teams only have 5 Power Supplies for use throughout the season...puts a HUGE burden on the engineers' shoulders, I think there will be significant growing pains in 2014.

.....and now you get to see the launch of a teams car with a little less budget.......

Paul Di Resta is already signed and ready to drive for 2013, but Force Inida is still on the hunt for their second driver. The rumor mill is that Bruno Senna is very close to, or already inked a deal, but they didn't want to announce it today and take the spotlight away from the launch of the car. Although they scored more points than they ever have last season they still finished 7th in the Constructors championship. Force India is another team that added in the 'fairing' in the front of the nose, so there maybe some advantage from doing this, as the air will be a little less disturbed going over the car.

The team has said that gains are harder and harder to find due to the regulation stability, so they couldn’t hold back. They had to redesign everything to maximize the potential of the car.

So here is the VJM06......

The Sauber lookx really cool. But the flow straighteners around the side pods are HUGE.

I can't wait for the Red Bull reveal. I always love seeing what Newey comes up with.

It's all perspective. Look how small the side pods are compared to the other cars.

Agreed. Everyone has the same areas to build in, but it's really initeresting how they compare to the others. The sidepods seem to be the big experimentation thing right now. McLaren is playing with crazy intake shapes again, and they've axed all the little fins and bits they had before.
