A look inside the Jeep Cherokee Toledo Plant

A local Toledo station has been doing a segment on the Jeep plant. This video shows some of the robotics used to assemble the Cherokee.

yah, having worked at an assembly plant and toured a few different companies (subaru/toyota/chrysler, bmw and Gm) i can tell you they ALL look like htat inside.

Those robots are everywhere and some are pretty cool. Many plants have autonomous robots that pick up finished pieces and deliver raw materials and parts for machining and assembly. Really a neat process.

JNAP makes the Grand Cherokee, Toledo makes the Cherokee (relpaces the Liberty). Cherokee's and Wrangler's are made in Toledo. Wow, you've made it around the Detroit area plants. Make it to Conner Ave and complete the circle.

THe other side of that is.....

 

• or will assembly line blue-collar workers begin to move beyond their current skill set?
  
• Will they insure they have transferable skills that allow them to change along with the times without being fkd?
  

Life moves fast and requires everyone to evolve just as businesses are doing.

 

I believe life is about what happens because of you, unless one chooses to let life happen to them. I know where I stand on that thought.....

 

Now will prices reflect the efficiencies...doubtful, but then in public companies, efficiencies aren't put in place to benefit the employees first. Work for a not-for-profit if that's what people are looking to have. I do :gabe: We are a $4B co. who is run by a board and owned by our customers. Our profits go to the employees and back to our customers. Not to a board of investors, or some rich private family. We take care of our own very well, do the same for our customers in terms of rebates back to them (doctors) and that's about it.

 

It's important to know what type of company to work for if you're not going to own your own. I run a production facility too with tons of automation. We don't "eliminate" many jobs as we cross-train people. I have gone from 78 employees to nearly 200 in 4 years of running the facility and in fact break ground on a full third shift starting Monday

Replacing a human with a robot is almost always a cost savings for us. Weather or not that get reflected in the price of the vehicle, I couldn't say. For instance, I am working on a cell right now to assemble, test, and install the differential in a transmission, and by going from 2 associates/shift to 0, we cut our cost in half to produce the parts. You cant look at it like preserving jobs for everyone, you need to preserve your own. If you don't make something as efficient and cost effective as you can, someone else will.

I've been to nearly every Chrysler facility east of the Mississippi. Unfortunately, some of them were very specific trips so I didn't have time to get to know the operations, hence my lack of knowledge on Toledo. My main area was Michigan and Wisconsin, which is ironic since Toledo was so close. I used to do a lot of work for GM and Ford in Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky as well. I spent a lot of time at the GM Tech Center, that place was fucking cool.

All I can say is, I really prefer not to work automotive ever again. Though, I still get the occasional call for work I don't do as much in automotive as I used to. I really don't miss it, though it's neat watching raw material come in then a car roll out.

I loved working R&D, we got to break shit all day and get paid for it. Nothing like taking a Magnum v8 to 10k+ and waiting till it flies apart!

Not sure if the jeeps get painted at that plant, but the dodge dealership i worked at, all our chryslers, dodges, jeeps, rams, etc. Came in the THE WORST paint ever. Orange peel EVERYWHERE and just looks horrible.

You mean on the new Cherokee, or on their older models? I wouldn't compare this to anything done previously.

Anything that was a 2012/2013 model (Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, RAM) had the WORST paint imo. Orange peel everywhere, what would look like overspray, spiderweb cracks in the paint, they were just horrible.
