We received a tip e-mail from BangShift reader John Rasmussen that contained a series of photos that literally stopped us in our tracks. The photos, according to the text in the e-mail show a Caterpillar 793 mining dump truck with a very, and we mean, very, blown up motor. As the story goes, the truck was shifted from sixth gear to first gear and that is what caused the 4700ci, turbocharged, 2500hp, V16 engine to completely and utterly come apart as though it were stuff with a small nuclear device.

There are a couple variants of the 793 dump truck, but we can say that the truck, if loaded would have weighed about 850,000lbs when the “bad shift” was made. As you will see in the photos below, the crank looks like it was the “fusible link” in the whole equation and it broke into roughly half a million pieces. The giant connecting rods strewn about, along with the exterior carnage to stuff like the engine fan and what looks to be a bellhousing of some sort is truly amazing.

We do not know who shot the photos or who to credit with them but we do know that we are very glad that (a) we were not driving that truck when it happened (b) we did not have to call the boss and tell him about this © did not have to call Caterpillar and ask, “how much for a 78L crate motor”? (d) have to tell the EPA that however many gallons of oil just lubricated the Earth!

Scroll down to see photos of an engine that had a very, very bad day!

Thanks to John for the tip!

So no shit there I was, and this is a true story. I use to be in a unit with 16 speed, 20 ton Dump trucks. I was an E4 at the time. It was close to the end of the day, but this truck needed moved. SGT said give me a driver, so I said I'll go. I jumped up in the truck, it had only been parked a short time, so no need to let it warm up more. He's ground guilding me. The truck only needed moved a very little bit, less than a parking space. Although I did not know that. He's waving his arm like come on, come on, hurry up. With an empty truck and it being a 16 gear, it's ok to start out in 2nd gear. So I give it some gas and it takes forever to move. Just as it moved about 5 feet and the turbo spools. He gives me a very sharp hand signal to STOP! I slammed on the breaks. I was afraid we were about to hit something, unseen to me. Nope. That's just all the distance it needed to be moved. Well, all that momentum in the drive train had to go somewhere and the drive shift snapped off at the knuckle to the rear dif housing. The drive shaft flung around out of control under the truck, breaking and smashing what ever it touched. Untill I shut the truck off. The carnage was imprssive.

The bad. Out of nowhere, 6 sworn statements were submitted, saying I jammed the truck in reverse after reving it up high. Total BS. I was lucky an investigation was done by a super guru Warrent Officer. 1, the truck was still in 2nd gear, broken to where it could not be moved in any way. 2, it's a mechanical impossibility for it to go from 2nd to reverse. 3, WTF does this unit have agaist this soldier?
