Anteater?

The worse part is that the new regs were supposed to help diver visibility too. But this nose is even HIGHER than the old one over the suspension. I don't know how the driver is supposed to see.

Wow! I like what they did with the nose compared to other racing teams, seems like this one will give additional down force due to the opening on the bottom of the nose. Do you know where the air that goes in the opening comes out at? Also surprised the ends of the front wing isnt curved to help channel air around the tires since the new isnt as wide.

The thinking is that the air that enters the front will travel much like the old cars (under the nose and then out to the side pods to increase downforce on the "tea tray"). The slope of the underside of the nose will accelerate the air that enters the front, creating a low-pressure area that will draw even more air from around the sides to join the flow underneath, increasing the downforce further.

Will this work? Who knows? Ferrari's wind tunnel efforts have been a bit ineffective lately (resulting in at least one guy getting sacked). But even if it does work as designed, it still won't be as good as the high nose. Overall, the new nose regs and the smaller front wings should mean less front downforce. With the removal of the lower element on the rear and the mandated center-exit exhaust, rear downforce will be down too. I don't think we'll be seeing as many record times in 2014 as we saw in 2013... ..unless the torque from the new electric motors make exit-speeds notably higher.

About the only team without a penis nose is Mercedes...and then Hamilton crashed it today

Looks to me like most is of the teams probably had certain portions of the design frozen by the time this rule was introduced, so they slapped the appendage on to meet the minimum requirement.

The Force India one is the worst.

Add Ferrari's anteater and RBR to the non-cock section. RBR's is bizarre but definitely no wang.

Any video from Jerez? NBCS not covering it.

Well it's over now, with Ferrari having the fastest lap time.

1 Raikkonen (Ferrari), 1m27.104s (31 laps)

2 Hamilton (Mercedes), 1m27.820s (18 laps)

3 Bottas (Williams), 1m30.082s (7 laps)

4 Perez (Force India), 1m33.161s (11 laps)

5 Vergne (Toro Rosso), 1m36.530s (15 laps)

6 Gutierrez (Sauber), 1m42.257s (7 laps)

7 Vettel (Red Bull), no time (3 laps)

8 Ericsson (Caterham), no time (1 lap)

I like the RBR design, but I'm curious how Newey got the under-nose airflow with it.

The Caterham design is one of the more interesting. The penis-nose designs look stupid and hopefully will become better looking by the first race.

The Lotus design could look really good too. We'll see.

As for practice times.. ehh.. I don't pay attention to them. Same as free practice, you're never sure you're seeing everything a team's got. Q3 is the time to really compare cars.

EDIT: Oh, the lack of a "Monkey Saddle" at the back of the RB10 is VERY surprising.

Truth.

Considering the cocknose + new powerplant + weather, lap times are pretty much the least significant thing to come from testing. They're really just making sure the cars work, and maybe some preliminary dial-in for their various programs but there's definitely no competition. It's just about making sure the cars respond how they're supposed to with the changes.

That thing looks hideous! I saw it with the straight-on angle on Jalopnik and thought it looked decent, but that side above shot makes it look horrific!
