bmwohio
Not sure if this has been posted yet. But I use liquid wrench much more often now (sold at Autozone, Advanced Auto, etc). Machinist’s Workshop Mag™ recently published some information on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you might appreciate this. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts. They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” environment. *Penetrating oil .......... Average load* None ........................... 516 pounds WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds Liquid Wrench ............... 127 pounds Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds ATF*-Acetone mix...............53 pounds The ATF-Acetone mix was a “home brew” mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the “home brew” was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that “Liquid Wrench” is almost as good as “Kroil” for about 20% of the price. Steve from Godwin-Singer says that ATF-Acetone mix is the best and you can also use ATF- lacquer thinner 50 - 50 mix. *AFT=Automatic Transmission Fluid
jeffro
Ive always used PB blaster with mixed success. Figured if PB blaster couldnt get it then it was pretty much fucked. Pretty interesting find on the home brew solution. Question though... How would you store and apply it? An empty 3in1 oil tin?
Turbs3000
What's your distribution method with the ATF mix.
bmwohio
I've never used the mix myself, but something like this would probably work: http://www.harborfreight.com/20-oz-flexible-spout-oil-can-1113.html http://www.harborfreight.com/4-oz-flexible-spout-oil-can-1106.html http://www.harborfreight.com/6-oz-squeeze-it-oil-can-96797.html
turbospec29
Wd40 is a solvent. Aren't the others more oil based. Meaning use wd40 to clean rust off already freed parts. I will now buy liquid wrench over PB.
Mensan
I thought I remembered posting some info or a comment on the ATF-acetylene mixture a while back, but I didn't realize how pertinent the conversation was: http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81587&highlight=acetone

Green Bastard
When you mix the atf with acetone, could you use fingernail polish remover or no? Just curious.
unfunnyryan
When you mix the atf with acetone, could you use fingernail polish remover or no? Just curious. Not the cheap stuff. ex had some that was like 98% pure however. I used it and her frilly cotton swabs for removing thermal paste all the time. My mom did nails professionally for a while and she would always get it from sallys. She had to show them her license in order to buy it. gillbot
I've had very good success with used synthetic motor oil. I should put it to the test and see how well it performs vs the atf mixture.

They give a discount for licensed professionals.
Benner
GM has some home brand penetrating lube that I love. It smells like cat pass but I've been able to free jam nuts with it and use my fingers to turn them
SHIEF
You can get 100% acetone on the web. Just have to look around.

Benner
Just mixed it up this morning. I'll post as soon as I find a POS that's all rusted up. I'm curious to see how it does around rubber bushings
miller11386
I have a can of Kano AeroKroil. That stuff does work on rusted bolts. Unfortunately its not really readily available to the average person.

PsychoticGaming
Though Kroil works great, I typically use PB if i have time to let something soak, if not I just heat it up with the torch
