Turbo Review; On3 Billet BB 67mm

This is a review of the http://on3performance.com/ billet Ball Bearing 67mm turbo.

 

I picked up a set of these turbos after having good luck with On3's standard bearing turbos in the past. I wanted something affordable, but with some modern amenities and updated aero wheels. I sold PTE, Turbonetics, FP, and Garrett turbos from 2003-11 so I saw the huge improvements turbine and compressor wheel designs have made over the years in moving air with great er efficiency. On3's billet line up on paper gives a great gap between improved efficiency and cost. Similar turbos sell for $2200+in ball bearing form

It came packaged well with super janky instructions. Really, if you need instructions you should not be buying a turbo at all.

The Compressor is obviously machined billet AL and not cast, as is the backing plate which is a great sign of quality. Both Compressor and turbine wheels were balanced (I verified the rear of the compressor was balanced with material removed) I did not check the dynamic balance of the assembly as I don't have the $250k machine to do it.

 

Wheel specs were sent as follows

 

Compressor:

 

Inducer: 66.6mm

Exducer: 84mm

Inlet: 100mm

Outlet: 62.5mm

 

Exhaust:

 

Flange: T4

Outlet: 3” Vband

A/R: .81

Inducer: 74.2mm

Exducer: 64.5mm

The Compressor is definitely updated tech with a thin center shank and much larger, longer, and more swept blade area. It also has an airfoil profile unlike most cast turbos which are just a uniform piece of material. Compared to the GT45 everyone loves

It does not take an engineer to see what compressor is going to move air more efficiently.

 

The turbine wheels looks more like the Aero shape of Garret's GT turbine, which is GREAT news! This is compared to a China GT45 (top) and a Garrett T31 turbine of a 60-1 (left)

Most people don't realize when the GT35r came out and crushed everything in the 6xmm arena, all they did was change the turbine and used the same compressor (very, very slightly reworked) as their previous T-61. People were bolting these on and gaining 60-80whp all from turbine efficiency. So, I am happy to see that technology used/mimicked here.

 

You can hear and feel the BB CHRA. Its not as loud as a Garrett CHRA which uses steel BB's, but its obvious especially when compared side by side to a STD Bearing unit.

 

Another nice touch is a true unique identifier. I dont know if anyone is actually keeping track here, but again its nice to see!

All and all, I am 110% happy with my purchase. These are by FAR the nicest "Chinese" turbo I have ever seen, and I have had 100's pass through my hands over the years. You can buy 2 for less than one of its competitors, all with a true BB CHRA. Also, its interesting that these wheels seem to be true one-off units, as they don't match any of PTE/COMP/FP or Turbonetics wheels I have seen or can find in the directory, and are obviously not BW/Schwitzer copies.

 

Funny thing is, this is about the turbo I asked PTE to build in 2008 (6762) for a TT Supra set up and they would not do it. Glad Chad found someone that would!! With the turbine wheel/housing sizing, I think this would work great on a 4 banger as well and will test one on a Mitsu or Honda in the next few months hopefully.

 

 

I have about 300 miles on these now, and the still have ZERO shaft play, same as they came out of the box. The are very responsive and I can see full boost in all gears on a stock 5.7 (twins), and positive manifold pressure @1600 rpm in 4th. I will be installing the rest of my fueling soon, and will have dyno charts available as soon as I build an intercooler set up.

It looks like Chad's really stepped up his turbo game. I've had appreciation for his hotside kits but heard neither good or bad about his turbos in the past.

 

Nicely done Chad. Makes me think about throwing a turbo at the Mustang again.
