zeitgeist57
Before I brought my Passat down to Florida this summer, I still share a '99 Jaguar XJ8L with my FiL who also has a condo near mine. We bought it with only 42k miles on it a few years ago from the same dealer I bought my BMW from in Naples. Fast forward 3 years, and the paint is getting absolutely obliterated. Admittedly, it sits in an executive parking lot by Fort Myers airport (uncovered), and when we use it it's on an asphalt parking lot in our complex (uncovered). http://i.imgur.com/dfQp2ul.jpg http://i.imgur.com/AMgswbn.jpg FiL was just down there and he got a quote for $1800, saying that they will have to sand down to metal to repaint it. Obviously, we don't want to spend that much on a $5k car, and with no plans of covering it, it's just going to get baked again in a few years. In addition to the trunk, roof, and hood, the paint fading is rolling down to the tops of the fenders. Any thoughts? I half-jokingly told my FiL (who is a car guy) that we can fine-sand it some more, to give it a patina'd "Rat Jaguar" appearance. Looks like it's going that way anyway. Understandably, he'd like it to look as presentable as possible, given that he's spending more time down there. Any advice would be appreciated. cstmg8
$1,800 seems like a good deal for a quality paint job. I understand not wanting to spend this on a $5k car, unfortunately the cars value doesn't change the painting process(as you well know). I'll just leave this here Clay........ https://m.facebook.com/swflautodipdesigns?refsrc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fswflautodipdesigns [emoji16]

zeitgeist57
Even if we dipped, I can't imagine it would last that long if paint (supposedly the more durable option) wouldn't survive more than a few years. I did think of that one. Peeling dip revealing a destroyed paint jerb: I can't think of a worse look for a car.

Although you may be surprised at the durability, especially depending on color. May require some light sanding to feather the edges if they're raised, but if you go with something like anthracite or silver, simply spray a refresher coat on after a couple years. zeitgeist57
http://www.amcarguide.com/wp-content/gallery/patinad-camaro/patinad-patina-camaro-2010-04.jpg I like the patina option because...why chase after a sparkling paint job when every single day the Florida sun is trying to kill it? Trouble Maker
If you do repaint it, can you get a nice 'sun proof' cover to put on it while it sits at the airport lot? Also, make sure it gets cleaned & a simple 'detail' when it is driven? Like one of those quick detail shops, just so it gets something done to it to help the paint out. TTQ B4U
Open that rusty ass wallet of yours and spend some cash and move your CTS-V down there and upgrade your Columbus daily to a newer AWD BMW

Clifford Automotive
Repaint it or live with it until it peels. The clears so thin it will start to peel next year. Don't wet sand it, you'll just make it worse. To repaint it, it doesn't need to go down to metal but will need to get down to the base.
