A Northeast Side animal shelter is planning an emergency adoption sale today after its heat was cut off yesterday because of a gas leak.

The CHA Animal Shelter at 3765 Corporate Dr. will make all dogs available for $25 and all cats for $5 from noon to 2 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Normal rates are $20 to $160.

When the heat went off, 100 animals were at the shelter, director Stephanie Wimbish said. Nine were adopted last night, and volunteers are fostering some of the animals in their homes.

About 75 animals remained at the shelter this morning, with space heaters being used to provide at least some heat, she said.

Plumbers are still searching for the source of the gas leak, she said, so no one knows when heat might be restored or what the repair cost will be.

“The big problem will be if they can’t fix the heat today,” Wimbish said. “Then we’ll have to figure out something for the weekend.”

The shelter, formerly known as Citizens for Humane Action, has a small paid staff and about 400 volunteers.

Normal adoption policies remain in place during the emergency sale
