I figured I'd share my 128i that I built for SCCA Solo STX Class since the season is over for me. Some of you know the car, but I like showing it off..

Car recently won the ProFinale and Overall Championship for ProSolo in Lincoln, NE as well as 5th/58 in the STX field during Nationals. Wish I could place better at Nationals but there is next year:

4th Toledo ProSolo

3rd Wilmington Summer ProSolo

Impressive standings! Cool how a properly set-up 128 does that much damage...

Aside from cost, was the 128 always the plan (over a 135)?

Still learning the car, I think I found some additional tweaking out at Lincoln that I can apply here.

I bought the 128 as a lemon law car actually, so cost helped a ton.

The 135 is classed into STU, which is fairly difficult to compete in because you can't fit big enough tires to become competitive. Plus I wanted to avoid issues of N54/55 engines. Mine has been bulletproof

Badass congrats.

I decided my current build will be competing in auto-x. Any idea what class a motor swapped E30 would fall in and how competitive it would be?

If it's swapped you'll instantly be in SM, street mod. Unless you want to throw paper at the car, it won't be very competitive.

How would a <2500 lb, 300hp/300tq, BBK, coilover, sticky tire car do?

Potentially, pretty well.

If you haven't AutoXed before, don't worry about classing. Just show up, have fun, and get some seat time.

To be regionally competitive, you just need all the seat time you can get and a well-prepped car. To be Nationally competitive you'll need to pick a class and then build a car.

Great advice thank you.

Not worried about short term competitiveness, but something tells me I would rather win with a slow car then get killed because I'm in the wrong class.

Plus, you get the bonus of beating cars that are much faster on paper and more expensive. :)

BBK would be a waste of money on a <2500lb car...spend that money elsewhere

Too late. Though you may be correct about autox, everyone has great things to say about it around an actual track. I haven't installed it yet, but surely going from 1 piston to 4 and a bigger rotor couldn't hurt.

truthfully, that depends... There's a lot of value in dropping unsprung weight... Aftermarket caliper carriers, aluminum carriers and floating rotors that have aluminum hats can easily drop 5-10 pounds per corner, which has serious value
