jerrodh
Quick question. Fiance's work laptop sucks it's like a 8 year old HP. The display is way to small for the work she does. Whats the most affordable way we can get a second monitor to work off of her Laptop. We would like it to work as a second separate screen not a mirrored screen. Her laptop does not have HDMI or DVI, just USB's. Looks like there is some cords out there that work from USB to HDMI but is that all we need!? It's windows 7 if that matters. I have a monitor already that can accept HDMI or DVI.
90G60
No VGA? What kind of work does she do? If graphics aren't a big deal (Excel, Word, ect...) the USB to HDMI should work.
jerrodh
Yeah its all excel, email and text based. Will the USB to HDMI work with any monitor because the monitor I was going to use is a pretty good 24" Asus monitor.
unfunnyryan
USB to DVI/HDMI graphics card is absoluetly fine for spreadsheets and web browsing. Video they aren't great on unless they've improved a lot recently

Coaster
I'm on my phone but on the back next to the VGA it looks like that is a displayport. If so you jsu need a displayport to HDMI cable and will get much better quality than from a USB. Probably cheaper too.

jeffro
Why not just use the vga port and so extended desktop? Or are you looking at one of those portable displays that require hdmi? If the later, then go with a display port to hdmi as already suggested.
ShowHBK
Like everyone else is saying, the VGA port on the back should function fine. That laptop should have an i5 processor which is more then enough to drive a 1080p display. Can you confirm that your laptop has the VGA or diplayport on the back? Second Gen
Model says it sports a display port. Get a display port to DVI adaptor and connect to your 24 inch ASUS monitor. Also the speed issue would be almost eliminated with something like the Samsung 250 Gig EVO SSD (about $120). This would bring this thing back to life for sure.. ShowHBK
Second the SSD recommendation. Third!!! Make sure AHCI is enabled in your BIOS for best performance if this is your first SSD.
