Lauren
Needing to pick up a winter beater. I'm torn between a second gen xterra or a first gen touareg. I've found a 04 v8 touareg and I've also found a 06 xterra. Common sense cost of ownership and ease to work on points to xterra. I dig the treg though. Anybody have any first hand experience? I owned a first gem xterra a couple years back. I wasn't blown away by IG but kt was decent enough. The second gens are way better look g and even today do not look outdated which is nice. Not Brian
Anything besides the Xterrible
Geeto67
Is the Xterra stick? Because that would tip it for me in favor of the xterra. Buddy of mine has a v10 Touareg diesel, that is the only Touareg that even raises my pulse.
turbospec29
I love my 2nd gen xterra, not sure why more don't. It's essentially a 4runner for a far better value. Only a few small problem areas, trans cooler (pre 09) check the trans fluid and coolant for signs of mixing ie strawberry milkshake, cam chain tensioners wear so listen for any rattle or tapping on startup, and the rear diff breather clogs causing pressure to build up in the diff and push the seals out. All are stuff you can mod easily and watch for.
Lauren
The xterra I'm looking at has the trans cooler bypasss.
Lauren
I also am leaning towards xterra because the 5.6 from titan is a direct bolt in. So next spring I could have a fun project
Fiji ST
04-05 Touregs have major issues with electrics and the air suspension if equipped. Just be aware of that. Xterras aren't terrible as long as you don't mind a bit of a rough ride.
Lauren
Also considering a E53 X5 3.0. Going to go drive that this afternoon.

I don't know much about the Nissan's, but have often wondered why they weren't more popular in the off-road scene. Lauren
Bought a clean 2001 X5 with the 3.0l. Stupid clean inside and out and was kept up on maintenance and cooling system has been gone through.
mugen
x5 have terrible maintenance touaregs are not much better xterras have depreciated quite a bit and could be purchased at a good price or you could by a RX330 and get reliability and a good SUV
Lauren
Seeing as I have owned some sort of BMWs for the past decade I'm not afraid of maintence on them. I specifically wanted the 3.0 because they are pretty much bullet proof.
Geeesammy
The xterra I'm looking at has the trans cooler bypasss. Still needs a cooler. Just add one in. I saw numerous guys bypass the cooler at nissan to avoid issues and needed a trans as a result.
