Geeto67
Ok, so I thought this would be a fun discussion to have on a Friday. It is completely hypothetical, I'm not looking to buy something off CL with my refund or anything. Say you had about $3500 ($5k if you need to push it) to spend on CL - what 1980's Japanese sports car would you buy today and why? I am going to disqualify the Miata right now because even though it was available in 1989, those are all 1990 models and outside the date range (same applies to all other cars where the 1st year is 1989 as a 1990 model). No million dollar one offs either, must be the kind of car you would expect to see on CL. Ready? Go.....
Not Brian
Always liked the looks of the Conquest TSI I used to own an S12 and that was cool, too. It was an '85 200sx turbo. If I ever get any kind of land or whatever I wouldn't mind buying another one for $500 as a 4th or 5th car to tinker with.. maybe slap an sr20det in there. Geeto67
Datsun 240Z the s30 240z was discontinued in 1978. The S130 280zx replaced it in 1978 and ran through to 1983. Did you mean that one? because it's a different looking car.

Geeto67
Would a Galant VR4 be considered a sports car? Probably not. Mitsu Starion I'll count it because of the VR4's rep, and also stick shift.

Red Beard
It is funny you bring this up. https://gearheads.org/8-best-japanese-cars-of-the-80s/9/ I was just reading this the other day lol. I know they are a bit of a problem child but the rx-7 is still one of my favorite cars from the 80's http://st.motortrend.com/uploads/sites/5/2014/10/1986-Mazda-RX-7-front-three-quarters.jpg

That's what I though, but I guess that body style was made until 83. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_S130 I would like one of those too please for $3000

The S130 has a a more angular 3/4 window fastback: S130: there is a slant nose version of the S30 called the Fairlady that looks similar to an S130, but the windows are still a dead giveaway: http://www.tokkoro.com/picsup/1234999-nissan-fairlady-z.jpg
Red Beard
Getting a bit off topic; But to add to the s130/240z epicness here is one that is local to ohio.... http://image.ibb.co/fpCTC6/FB_IMG_1513185348715.jpg

Geeto67
that's a dead sexxy s30. Shit, funny how that angled window kind of ruins the car for me. yeah, I kind feel the same way. Although I have seen some pretty S130 customs, none as sexy as an s30. Wailt till I point out that there's a 2+2 version of all these cars as well and the 2+2 looks like the roof is pregnant. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y7CJMJAenZw/TjXhuQKF8zI/AAAAAAAAKFc/KLU3W4ZrUtk/s1600/1976%2B76%2BDatsun%2B280Z%2B280-Z%2BNissan%2BFairlady%2BZ%2BS30%2BL28E%2BCoupe%2B2%252B2%2B1.jpg

Forrest Gump 9
Well, went to picked up the kids from school in the 996tt and decided to take the 280zx to work instead. That damn car always put a smile on my face. Mine is all stock, nothing like those above. A little obscure fact about the Z. The 2 seaters becomes the 370Z we have now. The 2+2 becomes the GTR. Hence the “pregnant roof” carried over on the GTR

Cordell
Has to be an early RX7. Always had a shoft spot because Dad was a Mazda tech the wholr time I was growing up and he had a handful of people who would have him do work on their 7s at home so there was typically a first gen RX7 around.
