Wease Posted June 13, 2018 Report Share Posted June 13, 2018 So back before Spectrum was Time Warner, every year I was able to negotiate a cheaper rate for my internet. They'd knock like $15 off their standard rate and I'd get my monthly rate down to $35. Once Spectrum took over, it went up to $60. I spent a hot second on the phone with them once, to try and lower the rate, but they weren't budging. Go to the store in person, complain about slow service, and tell them you are considering switching. it helps if you bring your box with you because sometimes they will switch it out if it is outdated. We were under a 30mbps deal with Time warner and Spectrum just kept upping our rate like every month, without upgrading us to the newer spectrum offerings. I've had success in the past calling Time Warner and working with them for another 12 month "deal" but Spectrum didn't want to negotiate. Worked with a retention specialist and the best they'd do is actually give me the 100mbps internet plus my cable and after 30 min on the phone they offered a whopping $15 reduction in my monthly bill which was still $30+ more than if I were a new customer. Switched to WOW and saved $50 a month in the process and that's on their month-to-month service also with 100mbps. If I sign a contract I save another $20/ month for the first year and $10/month for the second year but honestly I'd rather just be month to month I'm fine with it. They even tried to switch me from my TWC bundle to theirs, which was more money. I told them I will be switching my provider then and they didn't even bat an eye. Switched to WOW and when I called to have everything turned off, they didn't give a damn. No "How can we keep you?". Just turned me off and said goodbye. I'd dump them if you can. Geeto67 Posted June 13, 2018 Report Share Posted June 13, 2018 years ago, someone told me the people working the phones make a commission every time they sell you a package or an upgrade. Hence their incentive to give you existing promotional rates - they could cancel your existing service, make it look like in the system you cancelled, then sign you up for a new package starting the clock over again and collect the extra pay by making it look like they sold you a retention package. Word is that spectrum discontinued this practice of paying commissions on retention packages for calls in (they still do outbound retention calls if you actually cancel your service) which is why the phone people have suddenly become less willing to negotiate. In person sales I don't think are compensated the same way. Keep in mind this is all hearsay, but it seems consistent to me - the best deals I have always gotten by showing up on a Saturday with my equipment and talking to a real person.
