they both take on a role and then form their whole lives around that character. thoughts??

You saw the original with Gene Wilder right? I just think that his character, not Johnny Depp, portrayed Wonka as a weird, crazy, nut job instead of a genius who created one hell of a factory. IMHO

Not really, his films are varied and he adapts to each. His success in Edward Scissorhands and Pirates of the Caribbean, didn't stick him with with being a Frankenstein or gay Pirate forever. He moves on...

If there is a trend, it's scary stuff and pirates and chocolate...

No, I agree with the fact he adapts to each role he plays. I think he is a very good actor. I was just let down with the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake. But I am sure that was more on the writers/directors than him. I actually just watched Edward Scissorhands yesterday. I do enjoy most all of his movies.
