I need some home networking help...

Ok here's the deal.

Internet --> Cable Modem --> Vonage Router (192.168.15.1) --> Wifi Router (192.168.1.1) but wifi router is assigned 192.168.15.2 via Vonage Router

Which fucking port/ip do I need to add to the DMZ/ip forwarding to raise the telephone quality? I have a feeling the answer is going to be "None idiot, the telephone line is not part of the network it's parallel and since Vonage is not behind another router there's nothing you can do but raise the QOS via Vonage" ... but I'm just not sure.

I KNOW! I fear I'll need to be reviewing contracts this year and for some reason lots of folks resort to faxes because of signatures.

Noone ever heard of scanners I guess. I actually got a Wireless Scanner/Copier/Fax, so I scan my stuff then email it.

i heard our fax machine making noise in the office yesterday for the first time in at least 6 months. the new girl (probably barely 22?) asked what the noise was.

I thought she was joking, because we don't use the fax very often, but she really had no idea what it was.

She was a little embarrassed. I obviously helped the situation by describing to her how a type-writer and track-ball worked as well :-D

IP port forwarding and QOS are two seperate things.

Unfortunately, if your phone is working at all then you have the IP port forwarding or DMZ settings correct already. The QOS that you can define will be minimal as it will only apply to your local traffic. In other words, if you aren't using some other computer to download porn or talk on skype while you try to use your vonage then QOS probably isn't your problem.

Either way, if there is QOS settings on either device it will be some sort of priority assignment that you can give to certain ports or IPs.

The problem is likely with latency or Jitter on the link coming into your house from your ISP.

Hope that helped get you in the right direction. I've never set up vonage before but I'd dealt with a little qos and port forwarding in my day.

Wouldn't the fax plug into the phone line of the vonage router? If so it's probably more of an issue between vonage and your ISP, the Internet, which you have no control of.

Fax over VOIP is a little more delicate. The sounds being transmitted need to be a little more clear. There are a lot of factors that could play into this.

It's really funny to think about Fax over VOIP. It's essentially an early form of a dial up modem. You are transferring data in a digital way (ones and zeros) over an analog line using sound. What is funny when it's over VOIP is it's digital over analog over digital (ones and zeros represented by sound over IP). In theory anyway. kind of makes me think of cassette tapes. Like when you took a store bought tape, made a copy and then made a copy from the copy. It's not really like that at all since there is no digital part but it makes me think of that.
