Mid powered sport tourer?

Hey all -

Haven't posted on here in some time - stopped riding for most of last season and all of this season. I'm back in the spirit and have started saving for bike. Intend to buy before next season so I've got some time to do some research.

Pretty much narrowed it down to some 1100 cruiser or even possibly a mid-range sport tourer. I like the V-Star and Shadow's on the cruiser side. But I'm not really too sure about the mid range sport tourer.

The Katana is an option in that range and the price is good. I know, they're heavy and pretty much frowned upon in the cycle community. I'm not looking to canyon carve, and actually I had a 750 kat as my 2nd bike. It got stolen after a month. But that month was great - thing was very comfortable to ride and had adequate power for me.

What else exists in the mid-range sport tourer class? Or should I just plan on moving up to an 1100 like the ST? Price is an issue, looking in the 4-5K range, used of course.

Also has anyone dealt with "The Cycle Co" on West Broad? I could finance and catch the tail end of this season, but not sure I want to go that route or just wait until next year.

The ST is a pig. I've owned one. Hated it more than any other bike I owned.

What are you looking to do with it?

Commuting with the typical freeway/pretty straight country road riding on weekends and vacations. Nothing southeast ohio like.

I don't want to get blown around in the wind - have had to deal with that with 500's/600's but I'm pretty sure I'd be good with anything 750 and up.

Well, then the ST is your bike.

well, I am slightly biased, but I will toss a triumph sprint ST out there. I love mine. great usable power, handles well, very comfy for the 500+ mile days, and so far mines been very reliable.

+1. Love my Spint ST. Reliable and versitile.

Research the Yamaha FZ6. It fits your description well. Several on Craigslist right now

Actually I read that the FZ6 is supposed to be a pretty comfortable ride - want to be able to ride for many hours at once though. Is it that comfortable?

This is kinda what you are describing. Think FZ6 with more power and better handling.

There is a good chance I'll be selling mine by next spring to buy a brand new bike. Reviews were always good and they are bulletproof.

The ST has more stability due to the massive weight (700+lbs with gas). It's main purpose for existing is going long distances on the highway. While I agree that the SPrint and the VFR and the FZ are better bikes, the ST fits the bill for what he wants to do in his price range, IMO.

That bike definitely looks good - but the weight has me worried. 430lbs dry? That's got to get blown around on the open highway right?

Gonna be tough to find one of these used - Craiglook has very few offerings and what they do have are old/expensive.

I like the heavy weight though - I'm sure it's as planted as a bike can get!

Also look into the bandit 1200. I know the motor is big but it has around a 105bhp with lots of ft lbs. They weigh in around 500 pounds and are very comfy. I had a 2000 and put around 40k miles on it, with many 3000+ mile 5 day road trips. They can be had cheap and are bullet proof. Can even get givi hard bags and turn them into a great sport tour bike. The vfr is nice but they are not cheap to buy. For the price range you listed you would be lucky to get a 7-10 year old vfr.

I've never felt it get blown around. Range is about 200-220 miles. The stock seats suck, but mine has a Corbin :)

The Bandit is definitely on the list - 1200 would be nice in every way except gas!

I won't be riding two up - at least I don't think so. Every woman I've been with HATES bikes...of course I might get lucky some day.

390bike has a clean title Kawi Z750S, 15k, for less than $2800.

Check that one out.
