Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act PPACA aka Obamacare

The health care bill has priced health care out of my reach.

You think the health care bill is the only reason that health care is coming more expensive? So tort reform, corporate greed (drugs manufacturers, health insurance companies etc) and the fact that most of the health bill hasn't taken effect yet doesn't count for anything? You're sticking with Obama's healthcare reform being THE reason you can't afford healthcare?

US Health care has been getting disproportionaltely more expensive for 20 years. Can't really pin that on Obama, can we?

But I'm sure people will try.

I know what we need to do!

We need to equalize wages so the burger flipper makes as much as the brain surgeon, that will be fair! Right? That way everybody can afford the same stuff.

So say the sweaty hippies on Wall Street.

I say that keeping people alive should not be source of profit. All aspects of healthcare should be operated on a non-profit basis.

Are you willing to do your job for free(not for profit)?

Slow down guys, I am busy at work and don't have the time to respond to all of this.

I can't wait to get the this one. A business isn't supposed to make a profit?

We need to talk about being an American.

We need to talk about being an American.

We need to talk about why we're supposed to be cool with bankrupting families when someone gets sick.

So why are schools not run for-profit? Or Fire stations? Or the police? "You house was broken into? Well, give use your CC number and choose immediate service, 24 apathy or fax-in-a-report-and-we'll-wipe-our-arses-with-it service."

I see healthcare as a basic human service like education, police, fire etc. All should be non-profit.

Education is a basic human right? I don't think so! Why should your choice to procreate be a burden on me? I don't understand why I should be taxed for your benefit, you chose to have a child with that choice cones the responsibility to care for that child NOT mine! I will share the expense of police and fire protection since I benefit from it.

Back to healthcare.

There are not for profits last time I checked such ad st Judes, Ronald McDonald's house, shriners etc..

Is there a better reason to go bankrupt? Personally I think bankruptcies souls be outlawed.

What happened to personal responsibility?

Why should I be taxed more because a family buys s loss poor insurance plan and files bankruptcy?

NO OFFENSE!!!

People need to grow up and be responsible for their actions and choices!

While on the topic of health care costs part of the reason for the high costs is Medicare/Medicaid either my doctor or the place that did my cdl physical had a sign posted that they charge 3 times what Medicare pays to cover the money they lose on Medicare patients.

You don't see it as being in the public interest that children are educated? YOU were educated (I assumed, although I'm wondering now).

There are not for profits last time I checked such ad st Judes, Ronald McDonald's house, shriners etc..

They work just fine, too. Why can't they all be that good?

Is there a better reason to go bankrupt? Personally I think bankruptcies souls be outlawed.

Responsibility for what? To me personal responsibility means you do the right thing and make up for your mistakes. My friend who's son got leukemia did nothing wrong. Or do you think different?

Why should I be taxed more because a family buys s loss poor insurance plan and files bankruptcy?

NO OFFENSE!!!

This was not cheap insurance - this was a standard United Healthcare PPO plan. Health insurances have a lifetime max. That's not a choice that the insured can make.

People need to grow up and be responsible for their actions and choices!

People need to do a better job of understanding what choices can be made.

What is the lifetime max on your health insurance? Mine is 2 million. If my son (through no fault, intent of choice of mine) was to get leukemia then my family would be bankrupted. What better choice could I have made? I don't even think an unlimited insurance even exists in this country?

Then your insurance has a contract rate which is lower. The only people who pay full price are the uninsured - who are least able to afford it.

Heck of a system we got here, huh?

Yep I think changes need made, but unlike you I don't believe universal health care is the answer!

So because you have s child I should be required to pay for their education? Why should you not be respons for paying for your child's education? Essentially this system is wealth redistribution! Since I have choose so far not to have a child I guess I should pay for everybody else choice to have children when they cant afford them. Yes I was educated, but I think my parents should have been required to foot the bill and not the tax payer!

If you like the system in England so well why are you here, and I hope you understand I don't mean to be offensive here. This is america, and I don't want European socialism here!

education is the back bone of a society and children are the future of mankind. Its never a bad investment to build a good foundation for the coming generation. As important as police and fireforce.

just my 2 cents which i am sure no one cares for :D

There are problems with socialised medicine too. Neither system is ideal. But I think the answer lies closer the UK system than the current US system.

The reason you have to pay for my kid to go to school is I spent the last 15 years paying for other people's kids to go to school. That's just hows it is. Raising a kid is expensive enough already - people who could not afford to pay private tuition fees simply would not have their kids educated and you'd have a country full of people with the edicational level of an amazonian tribesman.

"If you don't like it go home". That's the death throes of a failed debate right there. Can't you conceive of the possibility that no country has it perfect? I offer my opinion because it is directly relevant to the direction that Obama is going. If people want to make up crap about people waiting weeks for CPR then I'll correct that misconception. If someone wants to argue that socialist healthcare is a great place to get experimental treatments funded then I'll correct that misconception too.

So when an American says he doesn't like the US system, where do you tell HIM to go? :nono:

Healthcare, education, law enforcement and fire/rescue are fundemental to a well functioning society.

I believe we could afford a lot more if the government got their hands out of our pockets. So because you paid for everybody else kids for 15 years I'm supposed to like it. I wouldn't have near the issue but the parental that claim they couldn't afford to pay for their own responsibilities drive a newer car than me, smoke , drink, and can afford an iPhone yet can't afford food, rent, utilities, childcare, education.

This is a huge intrusion into our lives by the government. Look around and tell me one thing you do that don't have a certain amount of effect on your general health. If the government is is charge of "health" care then I see it (as usual) over stepping it boundaries and grabbing more power. For instance motorcycles are an obvious risk to you and your health, what if the government says sorry no more motorcycles unless you pay an extra tax to cover your extra health risk. Just a stretching example but everything you do in one way or another effects your health.

Direct parallel #4 - Broken ankle.

US: (me). Skipped ER because I knew they'd charge me $2500 and just tell me my ankle was broken and to see an ortho. Went direct to ortho instead the next day. Ortho sent me for MRI, decided on non-surgical treatment. 9 weeks of physio. Total cost of care $5000. Out of pocket for me was $2000. Would have been $2500 higher if I went to ER.

UK: (mother). Went to ER with a Tri-malleolar fracture of her ankle (much more serious injury than mine). Admitted immediately. Surgery recommended and scheduled for the next day. Pins/plates installed. Kept for a week, then released to 6 mounths of outpatient care and physiotherapy. Out of pocket cost was zero.

Just remember, when someone declines health insurance and then can't pay their bills, the rest of us pay for it. I wish I had the right to quit paying all my bills and have everyone else pay them instead. :D

I don't know if that's realistic though. Usually it goes like this:

Go directly to ortho. Get MRI. Get 9 weeks of physical therapy. Pay $2000 out of pocket. Get bill for remaining $3000 because you didn't get referred by your primary care physician, thus specialist care wasn't covered. Convince insurance company that it was medically necessary, they start to process your claim. Get bill again for remaining $3000 after insurance company terminates your policy because you did not disclose that you had acne in 1993, a pre-existing condition.

Long before you NEED healthcare, you need water, food, and shelter. I guess we should receive free bottled water, fruits and vegetables, and shelter because its a basic human right. Why do those evil water companies, farmers, grocery stores, trucking companies, food manufacturer's, utility companies, roofers, window installer, contractors, clothing manufacturets, etc get to make a profit. Without water you die in days. Without food you die in a little over a week, and without the proper shelter you can die in days. I lived most of my childhood without health insurance so I would rate it a much lesser human right.

Maybe entertainment and alcohol should be human rights also since they help your sanity while dealing with life.

Ha ha... THIS is awesome!

I have to agree with this; people should pay for my water bill and house because I need both of those to live. Sure, health insurance is not cheap but that doesn’t mean that someone else should paid for it for you. What happen to people having a desire to work hard and take care of themselves? Why do people want a handout every day? Work a little harder and pay for your insurance. Distributing my money to help you pay for your healthcare is called socialism, which BTW is just a nice word for Communism. That is not the America we live in and is not the America our founding fathers wanted.

Also, there are always people in every generation that do not go to college. We need people to do things that do not require a college education. Some people don’t want to go and some people just shouldn’t go. There is no reason why I should pay for someone else to go to college. My wife got a college degree and her parents couldn’t afford the whole thing. She worked her butt of to get scholarships to help pay for her college. It was her responsibility to do what she could to get her college paid for, not yours. That is the way it should be. No one should be forced to pay for someone else college.

So the government needs to get their hands out of my pocket and let the people do for themselves. What was that one saying some random guy said? "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." So begging for more money from the gov't is not exactly doing for your country.

Weird. When my son was born he got healthcare first.

Water doesn't bankrupt people.

Healthcare is different than health insurance now isn't it!

There are days you may use your health insurance, but EVERYDAY you NEED food, water, shelter. Without proper food, water, or shelter you need more health care. Would you agree that if all people had proper food, water, and shelter? I'm pretty sure your son wouldn't have been born if you wife didn't have food to eat, water to drink, and shelter to protect her from the elements. Correct? Did your son not receive nutrition through the ambilical (spelling?) Cord? So I would say he needed food, water, and shelter first!

Why aren't you concerned with providing children 3 square meals a day, shelter, water, juice, etc before giving them a "free" education?

So its okay for everybody but hospitals to make a profit?

Do people go bankrupt over shelter (house, utilities, maintenance)?

How much do you spend on groceries s week? What if you could spend that on healthcare?

How much is your mortgage? Utilities? If it was s "human right" you would have that money for other stuff. Or would you?

What is the tax rate in the UK? Cost of living in the UK?

Also, are we going to pay for the doctor to go to college and then pay the patient to go to the doctor? Well if the patient doesnt have to pay to go to the doctor because I already paid for it, who pays the doctor? Oh thats right, that means I will have to pay the doctor as well...
