speedytriple
Savage 17 hmr. Model 93. End thread. Much more versatile than a .22lr still cheapish to shoot and way more accurate out past 100/200 yards.
vf1000ride
Get a Volquartsen TF17. Best of both worlds. Reliable Ruger 10/22 style semi-auto rifle, chambered in 17HMR.

BDBGoalie
But really, a 10/22 is hard to beat for the price and fun factor.
Gump
I like a old lever action .22 Marlin or a Wincheter model 77 but a 10/22 is a great gun. Why, because they just work. Edited September 24, 2012 by Gump
scottb
A Marlin 795 or Savage MKII Bolt action 22.LR rifles are good value for the price. Also the Remington 597 is in there too. The is useful information on a site called RimFireCentral.com.Dick's sporting Goods usually run a sale on the Marlin with a scope for around $99, the savage might be around $125. ( these are last years prices)The .22Lr rifles are cheap fun, good rifle to practice the basics and also meet your needs.
max power
If you find the 795 with a scope for under $130, i'll eat my hat. That said, there is no better short range varmint gun for the money.

Why, because they just work.I really want a lever action 39a Marlin but every gun shop seems to have Henrys and have "just sold the Marlin".
