  4. Who then ? The church ? God himself although if that is true, then which god? The christian god isn't the oldest. Why should anyone take another man's opinion over his own if that man can't make a logical argument as to why. Believing in such an idea is not "open-minded", it's simply wishful thinking. The point of Atheism is not to "discredit everything", although that should be everyone's personal default scrutiny level regardless. Any working system should be able to withstand repeated attempts at "discrediting". Faith asks one to believe in the unbelievable, which is fine on a personal level, but to base laws, or god forbid court proceedings on such drivel is asinine. Do you shop for cars this way ? Someone pulls up to you with a piece of shit they said was mint on the phone, engine knocking, and screeching and sounding like its about die, but they tell you to trust them, what motive could they have to selling you something that isn't in tip-top shape, just as advertised. Why is asking for evidence of something "close-minded", as you call it ? Not blindingly accepting what you are told is close-minded ? You are actually repeating an age-old religious defense. Those who do not believe, are ignorant. At best it just means we disagree, at worst the minority of un-believers are subjugated, outcasted, tortured, or even outright destroyed. This is not hyperbole, it happens all the time. It's happening right now. Remember that 9/11 happened, because of religion. Even more awesome, that EVIL, EVIL MUSLIM RELIGION(it can be pretty barbaric and terrible), comes from the same region of the earth as Christianity, and Judaism. As a matter fact they are all related by Abraham. That is completely false. One's religion is almost always based on what religion that particular person was raised to believe as a child, which is almost always determined by that person's place of birth. It is called Childhood Indoctrination. If you are in the United States you will almost always believe in some variation of the christian god, to the tune of around 75%. Now you may not have been raised to believe in anything and found one's way to some form of Christianity, and believe such an event to be profoundly special, but it is not. You are mathematically more likely to find Christianity, because you are more exposed to it. If you lived in Saudi Arabia, you'd more likely be a muslim, or anywhere in Asia, a muslim, or Buddhist. If you were indoctrinated as most who believe in some shape or form are, your evidence is that those around you in your church, family functions, or fellowships also believe in the same thing. It is power in numbers. The main drive to "find god" as many call it, is simply out of fear. Fear of death, fear of losing one's consciousness, fear of being separated from the people one loves, and fear of the unknown. It is simply easier to pretend it's all taken care of if you follow "whatever". Actually the opposite is true. Religion is the entity pretending to offer all the answers. Religion has life figured out from birth to death to afterlife. Up in the clouds, 70 virgins, a thousand points of light and blah blah blah. As an Atheist practicing Agnosticism, I am perfectly happy admitting that I do not know how life "happened" on this earth. Could it have been The Big Bang, or Allah, or The 50 Foot Spaghetti Monster, or a tiny Unicorn orbiting Saturn's rings? Sure could have, but I can't know for sure, I can only estimate the probability to my best. Here are the things I do know. The bible was written by men. Men are corruptible, and can be evil, and self-serving. Hell, the bible itself, is a collection of man's constant, monumental failure to be decent, even when that man is inspired by god himself(Moses breaking the first commandment tablets, Judas ratting out Hey-Seus, Samson allowing an EVIL EVIL woman to corrupt his flowing locks, ADAM EATING OF THE FRUIT). So now do I think the Bible is true, or do I think it is a complex system of control, and revenue-generation that plays on mankinds natural fear of the unknown. I'll choose probability for $1000 Alex. Go ahead and ask me if I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Evolution happened on the macro level ? I don't, and I can't know. What I do know is I can see evolution happen on the smaller scale, and that I could at least fathom it, at a larger scale. However that is not proof. The main difference is this. If the scientific community as a general whole, finds what they believe to be a more repeatably testable answer, they will change their minds upon evidence. Religion refuses such tests, because that in and of itself, is not faith.

  6. i'll correct the other person if i am: 1. absolutely certain i'm right 2. if i give a shit about the subject 3. if i give a shit about the person who is misinformed 4. it will make a positive difference to that person (save them from making a bad financial decision, etc) otherwise, fuck it. they can go on thinking their stratus has a transmission straight out of nascar cause it has a "+" and "-" notch where you can shift up and down with the automatic, and that cause it's the model with the black wheels, the engine is rocket born of the crotch of thor.

  13. It is not oversimplified. If someone has a knife/gun/club/pipe/broken glass bottle (method), aims/points/swings it toward you (threat), and does not have their hands tied behind their backs (opportunity), they can cause serious physical harm/kill you at will. That is a deadly force situation! Like the quote that is so prominent around her says "it is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6." I have gone before Grand Jury in Franklin Co. before, and if my job requires it again, I will do it again. I will not leave my wife, who has been with me for 22 years nor my 3 small children without a fight! The reality of my job is that every day at least 1 person in this city would kill myself or one of my fellow officers if given the opportunity. It makes no sense to pretend that I am Chuck Norris when the situation dictates lethal force.

  15. I understand that the intention is to disable and not kill. However, if there is a person with a knife taking an agressive posture toward you THEIR intention is to KILL not DISABLE. If they only wanted to fight, the knife would have never come out. If they didn't want a confrontation to begin with, they would have just left. My point was that if you are in that situation, you are in a better postion if you have a superior weapon. There is a 3 prong test for deadly force in law enforcemnt. That test is method, threat, and opportunity. If you meet all three prongs, you should not be going hands on, you should be shooting!

  16. I did not say anything about firing into a group of people nor did I say anything about disarming him. I was making the illistration that I am indeed trained for this situation. Your initial statement was: "Except that some of us have actually trained in actual self defense including in dealing with things like disarming an attacker with a knife." My statment was: "I have to tell you that only a F-ing retard is going to intentionally take on an armed attacker unarmed if there is another means to bring an end to the confrontation." I don't know how many bar fights you have broken up in your time, but I will tell you that I have broken up HUNDREDS. Some of those were in college bars and others were in thug bars that you wouldn't come within a mile of the neighborhood. Also, I have had to disarm a couple of armed suspects (by hand), in real life situations as part of my job. That being said, I stand by my statment that "only a F-ing retard is going to intentionally take on an armed attacker unarmed if there is another means to bring an end to the confrontation." The day that you have had to go hand to hand with an armed suspect that ends with one of you going home and one leaving in a bag, come and talk to me. Until that day, you are only living with delusions of grandeur .

  17. How do you know what kind of training the attacker had? Maybe he had some extensive knife fighting skills. What if he had mad fusion style skills then we would all have been doomed...

  18. After being a bouncer in several bars all I can say is most people drinking are neither qualified to carry or protect anyone with a gun. Needless to say I don't drink anymore or go to bars. Too many idiots out there who think there 10 ft tall and bullet proof and too many folks ready to prove them wrong.

  19. I'm trained in self defense against an attacker with edged weapons also, and that training includes disarming that suspect. But I have to tell you that only a F-ing retard is going to intentionally take on an armed attacker unarmed if there is another means to bring an end to the confrontation. It is one thing if you are forced into that situation, but if at all possible, you should go in at least on a level playing field. Personally, I prefer to have superior firepower!

  20. I am a huge basketball fan, and was a Cavs fan long before lebron came to town... The 61 win Cavs weren't good enough, so lebron bolts for Miami where he can 'easily' win a championship with his buddies. Players colluded to bypass mgmt to create a team with an abundance of individual talent but little on court chemistry. And that's just what that have. They can overwhelm bad teams with individual talent. But, when elite teams beat them with good team basketball, they cry? Really? This is absolutely hilarious. lebron made himself a target with his skip-town-and-win-right-now-decision. He didn't seem to want the pressure of being The Man in Cleveland, so he created a situation with WAY more pressure in south beach. Too bad, but crying...never seen anything like it.:cry:

  24. The main reasons I see with this would be the state gets intrest off off the money that I get back. Like jrmmiii pointed out. Also everyone has different tax amounts to pay. To have a department to check what everyone should get taken from their check and update changes (like marriage/child birth), would cost more money. We also pay taxes into our local communities to pay for schools roads and other local things. I live in a county different from where I work my county really benefits from my tax dollars since I make it in another county. Plus the federal taxes we pay. If we did not pay taxes then people could say look at those state employees they don't pay taxes and be telling the truth. If there are state workers in your county that also helps you since they pay taxes it helps to keep the amount you pay from going up.

  25. But wait, if we go back to the old rules, we'll have to disarm when we enter the city limits. I'd rather have the CCW.

  26. The end comes when an animal can no longer control urination and defecation. Making messes all over the place. By that time appetite and activity is nearly non-existent. Some will do things like walk into a room or corner and get stuck, not able to figure out how to back up and turn around. The animal will signal it's desire to end it, by basically lying down and refusing to move. There is a dullness to the spirit, and an unwillingness to respond to the owner or other animals. Then it's time, beyond a doubt. And yes, even before that time, a healthy animal will often have become blind from cataracts, and deaf and unable to hear. The pain of old age is something all animals put up with. There is a desire to live. But at some point, we all lie down and refuse to get up. It's part of life. Celebrate the life, and not the death.
