  1. I'm not a big drinker, but used to be. I try to stick to the legal limit on the road. That's bad enough on a bike. I've been tanked on a bike a couple of times, and it's best to just go home. It's usually not comfortable, don't want to lean in turns, and head hurts when hitting bumps in the road. Whiskey might be the exception. Makes you want to go really fast until you suddenly stop. Sure as Hell wouldn't try it on a brand new bike... And still wondering how bike, rider and helmet parted ways at right angles. I think the helmet just bounced off to the side.
  2. And yes, that's what it looks like. A dead short at or near the stator. And I might call that a design error, a factory defect. I'd push that one right up to the factory rep. Pack it in a box and send it to them, if they request it. Worth a couple of phone calls. edit: check around the engine case and cover where the wiring may have shorted out. It probably has a burn mark like mini welding.
  3. Yes, if the rectifier diode goes out, then that part of the stator ceases working, no output. Wouldn't fry like that. Near as I can remember. I don't think I've ever seen one fry like that. It's mucho cooked one of the three core winding sets. 5 of 15 coils. Looks more like an internal short to the stator itself. Dunno, at least you found the problem. Pretty darn visible, wasn't it? The stator output would fry a wire or fuse, before it fried itself, if something was connected wrong. Exception would be directly connecting those coils to ground. And that's a stator internal short, I suppose. Actually, take that one back to the factory shop, and see what they say about it. There are lots of stator recalls on bikes.
  4. My best guess is the 7 amp tail light fuse isn't working, or that light blue to brown/white wire is loose or disconnected or corroded (dirty) inside the headlight bucket.
  5. Unfortunately, you'll find that the tail light uses only 3 wires, tail, brake, and ground. The ground runs to the ignition switch, where it decides whether you've selected on, off, or park. Tail light power in Park comes from a different wire and fuse (main 15 amp fuse). Normal running power for the tail light at the ignition switch comes from the near the Starter Switch wiring connector (brown with white wire), which in turn, picks it up from the fuse in the fuse box (light blue wire), at the 7 amp tail lamp fuse. The brown w/white wire probably connects to the light blue wire inside the headlight. Brake light is an entire different circuit. So... your choices are, bad 7amp tail light fuse, bad connection at the Starter Switch connector (or other inside headlight), bad Ignition Switch, or either of the two wires is bad; either between fuse and starter switch (headlight wiring), or between starter switch (headlight wiring) and ignition switch. When I say bad, that's mostly a dirty connection you are looking for. Even the fuse contacts, should be nice and clean. That's often the first place to go bad. Or a broken or disconnected wire. A quick voltage or resistance trace from the brown w/white wire at the ignition switch, to the contact of the 7amp fuse, will find the problem. You'll have to work around the wiring path till you find the bad spot. If you or a friend have electrical experience and a VOM (Volt-Ohm Meter), it will be easy.

  8. Crap. Good thing you're ok. The bike can be fixed up. This might have been one of those tired and dehydrated things. Running low on water really messes up the concentration. Frequent stops on a bike are almost a necessity. Sometimes when you stop, you realize you were not feeling those messed up dehydration effects while you were still moving. But it hits like a ton of bricks when you stop. Over the years, I've learned to quit cutting it up after a length of time, and just take it easy, real easy sometimes, for the rest of the day, or on the way home. BTW, attackpainter could probably plastic weld that panel up. Especially if you got all the pieces and parts. I wouldn't throw it out just yet. Proper adhesive and patched on the back side work also. Putty and paint. Edit: ehhh, looked at the pic again, maybe not keep it. Be sure to check around that slider, and make sure nothing where it's mounted got broken (engine or frame). Check the bike over, and make sure nothings loose, check front forks in case they twisted a bit in the triple tree, and that both wheels are still straight and true.

  10. Yes, if the piston rings were replaced, it should have a break-in period for the piston rings. All engines produce metal inside, in the oil, all the time, but only a tiny tiny bit. It's usually a shiny sludge, not big pieces of stuff. It's usually aluminum sludge. Aluminum is softer than steel, and will wear away slowly. The oil keeps it from wearing away quickly. Any steel or iron particles are not good.
  11. More: What ousley99 and cmoosego said are also true. Beyond the factory break-in period, it's best to be gentle or cautious for a while with the engine. You can slam it a few WOT after break-in, but avoid constant abuse of the engine. The engine itself will let you know when it's time. Listen to what it's telling you. You can feel it. It's a Zen thing, I guess. The same is true for you the rider, you have a break in period with a new bike. Do it right.
  12. From YOUR 2006 R6 owners manual: My opinion: Break it in this way for the street. Other break ins are for other purposes, like use for the track. The reason: I worked for a Honda motorcycle shop, and the test ride bikes often got flogged WOT before broken in. Sometimes we'd have to re-build the engine. Same is true with owner's that didn't break them in, and brought them back. The usual symptom: The bike would smoke a lot out the tailpipe... Techie stuff: The break-in period is for the burnishing of mating metal to metal surfaces inside the engine. Mostly that is the piston rings, but all moving parts are included. Translation: Special little things happen to the metal on a microscopic level, that make the engine happy. Note: most manufacturers put their new engines through a minimum break in on a test stand, to avoid problems with owner break in of the engine. They all have to do this, to avoid having a lot of vehicles come back messed up. I've got a full set of 2006 R6 manuals in PDF format if you want them. I can put them on a CD.
  13. Cool, and that's about the most common solution to a back end problem. Stuff moves around from the torque. I've had the axle on chain bikes move forward, even with axle nut torque correct. Sometimes they have to be a bit tighter. You might look close at the two mating surfaces, at the pinch bolt, the next time it's apart. Make sure the two surfaces are in complete contact, and not greased up or anything. Your "shear pin" should work ok. If there is any room at all, maybe a shim washer to fit under it.

  15. I don't think China has very many nuclear weapons at all. Sort of like France. France has just enough of them, to be a deterrent, to prevent anyone from attacking them. But France won't say how many, and neither will China. It is very likely that our own US Navy submarine fleet, alone, has more nuclear weapons than all of China. Many times over, actually. And guess where they are located for duty... But the idea of China waging war is not unheard of. China fought a lengthly border war with Russia, and not that long ago. It was in a remote area where news teams would never be going. All data came from satellite surveillance, and little of that was released to the American public. Damage done to both sides in equipment and lives was pretty darn extreme. But mostly it was a complete standoff, neither side won anything. China fought a quick border war with North Vietnam, after the Vietnam War. China got their butts handed to them pretty drastically, by North Vietnam. North Vietnam had a huge amount of active military experience at that time.
  16. Socially, economically and politically, it's already underway. Defaulting on loans would mean we win, sort of, but lose at the same time. Iran prints more US dollars than the USA, all counterfeit, just to mess with us. North Korea is still technically at war with the UN and the USA, ever since the Korean War Armistice. Physically they do not have the proper military equipment and resources to do anything at all, to us here in North America. (With the exception of long range ICBM (InterContinental Ballistic Missiles). And that is a war they would lose anyway. We would, without a doubt, fire them back. They would have to draw us into a war in their own backyard to accomplish anything. (Already close to it in some places.) Even then, China owns only enough strategic fuel reserves to wage a full blast war of only about 3 weeks at maximum. After that, they are walking. But they are now working on that, building up more in storage. So no...not yet... but some day, yes...
  17. Which metric? there is like 12 or 14 different popular metric systems, compared to one SAE. I use both, but it can be tricky using some of the odd metric systems. High Speed rail in Europe has infrastructure that doesn't exist here. That will be an uphill battle. But I want to see it happen anyway. We have to get the rail right-of-ways back, improve them for high speed, and eliminate all the crossings. Making all roadways go over or under. That's what is in Europe. The exceptions are little farm dirt roads, and the farmer knows not to be hit by a high speed train.

  21. Can't find it. It was a utube. Utube is now littered with GTA clips from geeks on the motorcycle. It was two videos from a webcam watching the bike. The first one, the guy walks over and sits on it and tries it out. Forks are locked. edit: he uses his foot and snaps the fork lock. The second one, he's brought a truck back, sits on the bike, and rolls it over to the truck and gone. My favorite is one from overseas, where two guys in a minivan pull up on a street full of pedestrians, and try to jam a bike in the side door (rear seat is still in there). It took them a while, but they got it. I'll post them later if I find it again.

  24. I use lasers at night to move the kids away from scoping the cars. They run and never come back. It works so good, I bough a batch of cheapo lasers and handed them out to the neighbors, and told them what to do. Lasers work right through the window glass. For some reason, kids and bandits avoid this area... No one should sit on your motorcycle without permission. No exceptions. Feel free to react in a nearly violent manner when they even think about it.
