    Yup, driving around sitting behind 1/4'' or so steel plating isn't the best feeling in the world but it beats fabric doors any day :D We knew it wouldn't stop much at all, just slow it down...some...

  2. Huh? My buddy said they had no armor when he was in Iraq. He welded on his own steel plates so i figured they'd skimp behind the tire.
    an unarmored humvee? they are ALL armored, im 100% positive, i work for a company building them and suburbans
    The OP can chime in on this one, as he was in Iraq a few years ago, and worked on said humvee's.

    When We got to Afghanistan/Iraq in Feb of 2005, we had NOTHING uparmored. We cut steel plates in place of windows, sandbags on the floorboards, yada yada. After a few months, we started to get armor kits and bolted them on the trucks. Of course the added weight took a toll on the stock suspensions, so we had to get kits and beefthose up. Now all units going over or already there have factory built up-armored trucks. They are taken over there, and stay in country. Almost nothing, if any up-armored vehicles leave the middle east until troops and equipment are rotated out to turn the country back over, or when they are needed in another war-zone.

    Nothing even close to that was inferred.... Johnstown roads are straight, for the most part. And I don't think I'm even CLOSE to being fast on the bike.

    Attackpainter (I think) was talking in another thread (if I find it I'll edit this post) about the matte finish paints on some of the newer bikes being a clearcoat with a "flettening agent" in it. We'll have to see if Chad can get that for the stuff we use....

    I'll have to ask Chad, or if you see him first...

  4. Serious vote now.... Gloss black, but it has to be the black the guys just put on that harley for Mike.

    You also need to do flush mount turn signals, and SOMETHING with those bubbles....I mean mirrors....

    That was a sweet black. And I am planning on getting different mirrors. I think I know where my elbows are now. lol

  5. Got these from OFCC.ORG. I have about 20 of them, if anyone on here wants/needs a couple let me know. They have the other states that honor Ohio's CHL, Forbidden Carry Zones, Motor Vehicle Laws and some CCW websites listed. They make a nice pocket reference. I went to PA thru WV and couldn't remember WV gun laws. I had another card like this and was able to double check if WV honored my OH CHL.

    Let me know and I can drop some off, you can pick up, or I can mail them.

    The University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Wausau, Wis., company have come up with a 37-inch, bullet and bomb-proof Humvee tire based on a polymeric web so cool looking there's no need for hub caps.

    Resilient Technologies and Wisconsin-Madison's Polymer Engineering Center are creating a "non-pneumatic tire" (no air required) that will support the weight of add-on armor, survive an IED attack, and still make a 50 mph getaway. It's basically a round honeycomb wrapped with a thick, black tread.

    The military wants an alternative to the current Humvee "run flat" tires, which despite the name, still need a minimal amount of air pressure to roll and can leave troops stranded after being shot or blown out.

    "You see reports all the time of troops who were injured by an IED or their convoys got stranded because their tires were shot out," said Resilient's General Manager Mike Veih. "There's all sorts of armor on the vehicle, but if you're running in the theater and get your tire shot out, what have you got? You've got a bunch of armor in the middle of a field."

    In developing the design, the Wisconsin team studied other airless tires, like the Michelin "Tweel," but in the end settled on lessons learned from nature.

    The patent-pending design mimics the precise, six-sided cell pattern found in a honeycomb and best duplicates the "ride feel" of pneumatic tires, according to the developers.

    "The goal was to reduce the variation in the stiffness of the tire, to make it transmit loads uniformly and become more homogenous," said mechanical engineering professor Tim Osswald. "And the best design, as nature gives it to us, is really the honeycomb."

    This particular geometry also does a great job of reducing noise and heat levels while rolling-two common problems with past models.

    Costs per tire are expected to be the same or less than current units. Delivery is anticipated for 2011

  9. You could use the black I'm doing on mine... its a honda color called flamenco black. It looks deep black, but at the right angles there is blue pearl. there is a another version of the same color with green pearl instead. OR you could get that color on the new chryslers...... it looks black at angles, but is a graphite with a s**t load of metallic. Using todays base/clears makes paint work easier, but can still be fk'd up. Just be sure and get everything clean and take your time not laying heavy coats. Depends on what paint you go with on expense........ just don't buy the cheapest. You really do get whay ya pay for in paint.................

    We paint at my shop, we have a pretty decent paint that we use, although I don't remember what brand. Thanks for the ideas. You paint professionally dont ya?

    That might look cool.

    How extensive is the damage? I'm asking because it's probably more practical to restore the busted parts. And the resale value holds up better that way. Deciding factor might be how much the stickers and decals are going to cost, if they have to be replaced. That holds true for a complete paint job also. The vinyl stickers/decals are expensive.

    It's a 1996, so I suppose it doesn't matter much either way. Most bikes eventually get painted and do without the original markings.

    Ok, black is nice, but it's a difficult color to paint up. I wouldn't think so, I mean it's black. But it's touchy about temperature and humidity when it's painted. And often black paint cracks a year or two later. Funky spider cracks all over the places where it was too thick or coats applied too soon. Ok, most of my experience is with lacquers, enamels might be easier in some ways.

    But anyway, if it were me, I'd consider restoring the paint on any parts worth keeping, and trying to come up with something interesting but different from stock, for the parts that need the paint and repair. And skip the expensive stickers/decals, but maybe use some low cost stuff. There's a ton of aftermarket stickers/decals to use. Something that works with the stock parts that are ok. So that would be mostly black and the stock red color. Adding accents of yellow and orange would work well for a harmonious color scheme. Optional would be adding purple and blue to the basic red.

    If you really want to paint the entire bike (but not the frame), I'd think that the large area of silver frame showing, would work with a two tone blue scheme, or a bronze/gold kind of thing. The original red and black works too. The silver is a neutral color, so any color paint should work ok.

    The damage isn't too bad, nothing I can't and won't fix. The decals are damaged on the right side, but I prefer the cleaner look so I will probably remove them all. The frame will stay silver. Thats kinda of why I thought black would look really good with the silver frame.

  11. Deciding if I want to repaint my bike this winter. It has some cracks and scratches when the previous owner laid it down so I want to fix those. So I'm thinking of repainting the whole thing. Not sure of what color(s) to go with. I thought of a gloss/metallic black. I will be painting this myself so don't want anything too complicated. Any ideas? Here a pic of how it is now.
