  1. Sounds like a pretty good idea. A little slim on details so far. I've never been to any of the places your talking about.
  2. The interesting thing is that wearing gear saved a life. The cage driver was hurt worse than the rider. How often does that happen? If no helmet, this would be "Another Squid RIP" thread not a mathematics exercise.
  3. The solution was to not expect perfection from a 30 year old motorcycle. I had it bled down but it still felt mushy to me. I thought with new pads it should have been rock solid. Lance told me otherwise. He explained how the master cylinder wears on bikes and that I had an acceptable amount of tension at the lever. It does stop way better! A MC rebuild is the only way to get it to have more tension at the lever, that and braided steel lines etc, etc. What I learned was the easiest way to bleed the brake is use 3 foot of cheap clear plastic tube from Home Depot and a large can of patience to to the job. I also learned that brake fluid hates plastic and anything with paint on it! (Like the tank) Soapy water in large quantities will help with that.
  4. Scrub a dub dub! You've got a lot off surface rust to get rid of. Looks like you'll be needing a chain too. While your at it get a new halogen headlight for it (ebay $25) Get a manual for it, your going to be doing some wiring work on it for sure. A schematic makes it so much easier to figure out what is going on. The low mileage makes it smell of neglect not abuse. I'll bet this cleans up pretty well. Should look great when your done!
  5. Yet another emotionally driven human interest story. The point is don't complain this guy has it worse than you. We'll be seeing a lot of these stories along with the "Plucky Person Does Great Deeds" and the ever popular "Do More With Less" helpful hints. It's not news it's CNN
  6. Glad to see you back home. Heal fast! If you need anything give me a call.
  7. Just flipped over 26,000 on the odometer. When I bought it it had 22,000 so I guess that would be about 2000 per year on average. I have been riding more this year than last but thats as close as I can come to an answer.
  8. The downloaded manual is for an 1100 not the 750. Here is a link to a 1993*95 gsxr 750 manual. http://rapidshare.com/files/52150212/service_93-95gsxr750.pdf They just might be different enough to matter. The 1100 has a micro chip controller on the generator. Don't know about the 750 but I didn't find a book for your exact bike. Try it and see.
  9. Looking around ebay I see a real wide swing on parts prices by year and model. A 1998 regulator is $120 A 2000 is only $25 (used) 2004 2003 SUZUKI GSXR 1000 GSXR1000 VOLTAGE REGULATOR $30 For the extra $100 I'd have to think about buying the wrong one and chopping some wires to get it to fit. Looks like the connectors are different but they mount the same it seems. But then I'm a cheap bastard!
  10. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-SUZUKI-GSXR-750-Voltage-Regulator-Rectifier-98-99_W0QQitemZ130319367178QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item1e57a3bc0a&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245 $120
  11. $141.02 from Ron Ayers http://www.ronayers.com/browseparts.cfm?SearchString=32800-33E10&adv=5&kw=fiche.ronayers.com Don't know if thats a good price or not, just noted it while I was there.
  12. I have the manual d/l ing now Here is the link to it. http://rs205tl.rapidshare.com/files/47845590/7034627/Suzuki_20GSXR_201100_20_2793-98_20Service_20Manual.pdf It looks like this model only has 4 wires (3 ac and +12?) http://fiche.ronayers.com/Index.cfm/Module/Main/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/2/Make/Suzuki/YearID/39/Year/1998/ModelID/6805/Model/GSX-R750/GroupID/290139/Group/ELECTRICAL_MODEL_W-X Hmm.. a read through the manual will answer all questions RTFM!
  13. That sounds about right. The AC voltage from the stator has to get to the regulator/rectifier somehow. +12 and ground would be the other two, sure! Set the meter to ohms x 1000 (it might say 1k instead) If you get a 0.0 reading if the rectifier/regulator is fried measuring from ground to the +12 wire thats bad. Keep in mind though that a 0.0 reading from any wire on the stator to any other wire on the stator is a good thing. Thats why you want to disconnect it from the wiring harness. Hmm... hang on let me see if I can finnd a wiring diagram for that model
  14. If it gets hot then it is passing a lot of current [amps]. This is bad. What it means is that there is a short somewhere along the wire. If the stator connect to the regulator, (which it has to,just don't know how it's wired) a shorted regulator sounds very possible. Regulators in theory have three wires. (Never seen a GSXR so yours may be different) 1 ground 2 battery 3 alternator Disconnect the regulator from the wiring harness so you are only measuring it, not the rest of the wiring harness. An resistance (OHM) Meter connected from ground to either of the other wires should have a high reading, several thousand ohms. Even if you reverse the meters wires you should still have a high reading. If you have a low reading the regulator is a suspect for that short you are looking for.
  15. If he gets out today I'm thinking a visit might be nice. Don't know where he lives though. Perhaps I should save that thought for another day. Can't spin much of a wrench with a cast on... It may be that help later would be better.
  16. Glad your ok That must have sucked watching it happen and not being able to do anything about it. +1 one for the trooper pulling in just then, a very handy witness in court! Make sure you mention the pain while talking to her insurance company...
