  1. My reading of the case suggests that the truck driver was still to blame for the accident - they just said his negligence did not rise to the level of a crime, and instead of an accident resulting form ordinary negligence. They are not blaming the cyclists for the accident. Am I reading it wrong?
  2. http://www.witn.com/home/headlines/Carteret-County-Deputies-Searching-For-Road-Rage-Suspect-After-Shots-Fired-199787001.html Probation? What a joke.
  3. Shopping around for car insurance. Online web form for Progressive won't accept a "VIN" of less than 17 characters, but my 1974 MGB only has a 13-characted "Chassis Number". Called customer service and their advice was; "Can you get it converted to an American VIN#?"
  4. Would you swerve into a ditch to avoid hitting a deer? No? Me neither. What about if it was car backing out of a driveway instead of a deer? Eh, how big is the car? What about a toddler running out into the road? Sure, you'd swerve? Even if swerving means swerving into a bunch of trees where you know you could get injured or killed? Now what if you had your whole family in the car...? These decisions are made all the time, and you get about a half-second to make up your mind. It's just sobering to be required to map out that decision-making process for other people, in advance.

    RIP rider

Did an oncoming truck turn left in front of him? Or did he run into the back of the truck when it slowed down?
  6. Definitely agree with cash-in-your-hand with a "you bend it, you bought it" rule before letting them test ride. Take your plate off before letting it go.
  7. Ah, fair enough. And I just put a 2-year registration on the damn thing a few months ago.
  8. ... and instead classify "cellphone use" as "impairment" under OMVI.
  9. Had a bit of a "duh" moment on this. Our cars have always been in both names, and her new one is no different, so when we go to register the Impreza we *should* be able to simply transfer the plates from the Outback. Then the Outback will go into hibernation for a couple of years, uninsured. As long as I have no hoops to jump through at the BMV when I re-register it later, that's probably the way I'll go.
  10. We ordered a new Impreza for her. Keeping the registration and insurance active on the old car will cost us about 225/year, so we're just going to surrender the plates.
  11. My wife's 2001 Outback broke down and needs a lot of work to fix it. We're getting her a new car this weekend. Her old one is going to get parked in the corner of my barn for ~3 years until my son is old enough to drive, at which time he and I will work on it together and it will be come his. In the meantime, I don't want to be paying registration and insurance on it. Has anyone here dealt with surrendering a vehicle registration (to avoid the risk of one of those "proof of insurance demand" letters*) and then re-registering it years later? Do I have to do anything special to re-register it? Or just take the title down to the BMV as if it was a new purchase? * = I actually got one of those on my Bronco while it was stripped down to the bare frame. I still had to prove insurance.
  12. That's because it's a proven fact that your; "What the F am I thinking?" sense doesn't kick in until your late 20s. What are there no 50-yo squids? Half of them grew up. The rest died.
  13. Define "quick"... To squids, it means the BIKE is fast. To bikers, it means the RIDER is fast.
  14. Stupidly Quick = when compared to your skill level. Some of you track guys here can do well into triple digits and be just fine because your skills match your pace (and I imagine the track is a great place to find out where that skill/pace limit is without "becoming one" with a minivan in the process). Some folks on out on the road shouldn't go above walking pace.
  15. My rule is simple: Stay as far away from cars as possible. I like to ride in the gap between clumps of cars, and will go out of my way to place myself there.
  16. Stupidly Quick, Under-dressed, Imminently Dead. We all see that kind of stuff all the time (although it take a more discriminating eye to notice the condition of the chain and suspension setting). I used to get worked up at stuff like no gear, poor maintenance etc, but these days I just chuckle and move on. My motto used to be; "Anyone who doesn't wear a helmet obviously doesn't think there's anything worth protecting up there..." Now my motto is; "Just don't be in my health insurance pool."
  17. Meh, if I come to hear your story I don't want to hear what's in your speech. I want to hear what's in your heart. You have a compelling story to tell... Just speak, people will listen.

    ABS or Pass?

Last bike had no ABS. Washed out the front wheel coming to a stop sign where it hit some oil or something left by a car. Fortunately, I was only doing walking speed by then and I was able to put my leg down and keep the bike off the floor, just. Had I been going any faster then I'd have eaten it. Current bike has ABS. Love it, would never go back. Especially on the rear wheel - number of times I've had to slow down rapidly in the wet and had that back tire cycle the ABS a few times... If you get the ABS bike then I would definitely advise trying the ABS out for yourself before having to use it fer reelz. The cycle rate on mine is very low, like 2 cycles per second - not like a car that is more like a buzz, 20-30 cycle a second. First time you feel the it kick in on the front you are gonna think your brakes failed, but then it will grip again.
  19. How do you search for that without having one of those; "What am I doing with my life?" moments?
  20. The bike has a title... It's just not in the name of the person selling you the bike. Ask yourself why. Another option is to hunt down the title if it's worth your time. Where did the seller get the bike from? Follow the chain back. I would never buy a bike without a title. Not even for a track bike. You always run the risk of the actual title holder claiming the bike back. Do you have the VIN? Can you do a title search on this page: https://ext.dps.state.oh.us/BMVOnlineServices.Public/TitleSearch.aspx Then you can at least figure out how long ago the current active title was issued and which county it is in (if in Ohio). As far as contacting the current title holder... that might be more difficult. The title division might be able to help you.
  21. I rode to work on 23rd & 24th. Although this coming week looks like a cage week.
  22. That what I do too. A weight on the back of the bike if I can't use an axle stand under the front axle.
  23. If it was me I'd put a junkyard motor in it. Brake stuff is simple and cheap, don't let that scare you off. How is the rest of the car? Think you can get another 5 years out of it?
  24. No title, no buy. I was about to buy a car one time when the guy said; "I'll need a couple weeks to get my soon-to-be ex-wife to the sign the title over." Remembering how much crap a buddy of mine had to go through to sell a jointly-owned vehicle during his divorce, I told this guy to call me when he had the title signed by her and I'd bring the cash right over, I lived 1/4 mile down the road. Never heard from him again. It's going to need a title if you want to run it on the road. You will have to go back to the last person who had a title on it and have that person request a duplicate title and sign it over to you. Has it ever been titled? I know the Ohio BMV will allow you to list title summary info based upon VIN. Does WV have the same thing? How much money are you saving versus buying a bike with a title? How much time will you spend getting it titled? What will you do if you can't get it titled? Or worse, if it comes back stolen or has a lien on it? No title, no buy.
