  1. Be careful - the minimum length for a shotgun barrel is 18" unless the gun is registered with ATF as a "Short Barrelled Shotgun".
  2. See how fast people will obtain proper ID when it comes to getting "free" money from the government. All the sudden, when it come to voting, they're helpless.
  3. Not whatever. If nobody changes anything, then it will happen again.
  4. While I believe that cops are far too eager to shoot people these days, you are easily comfortable with "giving away" a cop's life on the chance that a kid had a toy gun or didn't mean anything. A bullet from an AK would easily penetrate a cop's bullet-proof vest. There is no way I would expect anyone to wait until they have been shot at before taking steps to protect themselves.
  5. It doesn't matter what the kid did. The officers will be found to be acting within guidelines and they will be free to return to work and find another person to shoot. This is happening more and more. Because you might point a gun at the officer (but haven't), they will point a gun at you and shoot unless you submit to their orders and allow yourself to be disarmed and arrested. Sooner or later this will start to end badly for the Po Po.
  6. I find mine is loud enough to hear both my phone and GPS clearly at speed while wearing earplugs. I have some trouble feeling the buttons with gloves on, but then I don't really need to mess with the settings much anyway.
  7. Garmin has announced a new action video camera to compete with GoPro and similar products called the "VIRB". Their top of the line model has a GPS receiver plus Wi-Fi. It will be interesting to see how the video quality compares. Garmin's announcement here: http://sites.garmin.com/virb/
  8. First, there were significant concerns raised beforehand about the security in Benghazi. It may have been due to bad luck, or maybe incompetence on the part of the various agencies that nothing was done. While we don't like it, we are used to this type of performance by government officials. Second, when the thing went down, nothing was done. There were people begging for help and nobody who was in a position to do anything about it could get permission from Washington to move. Our embassy and ambassador were under attack and Obama sat on his ass. This was inexcusable. Third, after the whole mess was over, nobody has been able to get a straight answer about how this was allowed to happen. The administration is just doiing the roper doper waiting for people to forget about this. I find the whole affair disgusting and unfortunately normal for this administration. That anyone could defend this fries my brain. There is no hope for the future if this kind of performance by our government officals is considered accepable.
  9. I have the Garmin Zumo 350LM. I figure it costs at least 2 times what it should, but whatever. I am fairly pleased with it. It seems to be fast, solid, and reliable. I have been experimenting a bit with downloading preplanned routes and they seem to work reasonably well. The most difficult part was figuring out how to make the route I want using the Garmin "Basecamp" software. I use a Sena Bluetooth headset that gets loud enough for me to hear the GPS even when I'm wearing earplugs. I don't generally listen to music while riding, but some like the capability of playing music that the Zumo 660/665 have over the 350LM. It seemed to me that a lot of the trouble people had with the Zumo 660/665 was due to Bluetooth issues between the GPS, music, and telephones. The 350LM lacks these extra features and seems to be more reliable for it. All of the motorcycle GPS units are difficult to see in sunlight. I saw a comparison YouTube video on the Garmin 350LM vs. the Montana and the Montana was clearly better than the 350LM in bright sunlight and probably better than everything else out there. Then the video disappeared - I figure Garmin made them take it down. The Montana was just not what I was looking for, but it does seem like the technology is there for improved sunlight readable displays. It just hasn't worked its way into a motorcycle-specific unit yet.
  10. Don't think of gold only as an investment. Think of gold as insurance if things go really bad and your dollars aren't worth a crap.
  11. Tried out some cheap Korean Glock magazines for my G19 and they all worked perfectly. Nice.
  12. I think the Gemtech .22 suppressor is the gold standard. I have a Tactical Innovations and it was cheaper and works well enough. .22s are generally dirty and a suppressor that can't be taken apart for cleaning will eventually load up with crap and get louder and louder until you clean it. If you don't shoot much, maybe not a big deal, but not for me. I have an integrally suppressed Ruger pistol that is really neat but needs to be rebuilt every 1000 rounds or so.
  13. Savage rifles have a reputation for being very accurate and relatively inexpensive.
  14. Many people feel that once a criminal has paid their "debt" or served their time, they should no longer be denied their rights, including the right to bear arms. It's not that radical an idea, especially these days when they seem to make a felony out of spitting on the sidewalk.
  15. Because your average dope has no concept of protecting themselves or their family other than calling 911 or yelling "help" and hoping someone else will do something. The whole idea of taking personal responsibility for anything is foreign to them.
  16. I have been experimenting with some new noise isolating earbuds: 3M Peltor EARbud Noise Isolating Headphones 2600N http://www.amazon.com/3M-Peltor-Isolating-Headphones-Plastic/dp/B00AEY4QP2/ref=sr_1_41?ie=UTF8&qid=1359508739&sr=8-41&keywords=peltor These fit in my ears kind of like the earplugs I use and nicely attenuate the ambient noise while allowing me to not have to turn up the music very loud. When I tried speakers, I had to run them up painfully loud to hear above the ambient noise or else I had to turn them up loud enough that they distorted to try to hear them when I was wearing earplugs. Speakers turned up loud with earplugs was the best combination of these two.
  17. Nothing new under the sun until you realize that such widespread surveillance can be performed now at much lower cost and can be stored away forever. Before you know it, every movement can be examined after the fact by those special people who know what is good for us better than we do.

I've the guys down at Knob Creek fill 2 liter bottles with it. Nice!
  19. I rode 50 miles out and around Cincinnati. Then spent some time installing a Zumo 350LM GPS on my Multi. Not bad for mid-January!
  20. The biggest practical application, and the one that drove the founding fathers to recognize the right to keep and bare arms in the 2nd amendment, was to ensure that the government is kept in check. The citizens must retain the means to make sure the government works for the people and not the other way around. Self defense is also a natural right. Hunting is an interesting hobby, but it is not what the 2nd amendment is about. With gun ownership comes responsibility, but we should not have to get permission to exercise a basic right. We should not be denied a right guaranteed by the constitution without formal adjudication in a court of law. You can shop around and get a doctor to say anything. There will always be some criminal misuse of guns, just like anything else. It is unfortunate, but it is a cost of liberty. The alternative of a totalitarian government without the means to escape it is ultimately far worse. If you think that no citizenry armed only with small arms can prevail against a large organized army, go read about Afghanistan.
  21. Basements can have high humidity, but I would worry more about temperature swings causing condensation in the garage. Also, the harder it is to get down the stairs to the basement, the harder it will be for someone to carry it away. I would make sure you bolt it down securely to the floor if you put it in the garage. In either place, I would put in a small heater (Browning "Goldenrod" or equivalent) to try to keep moisture at bay. I was able to easily remove my safe's door to reduce the weight that had to be muscled down the stairs.
  22. Dittos on the Ducati Multistrada.
  23. And they would pay even less attention to a gun law or "Gunbuster" sign on the door. At least with someone carrying there is a chance to do something useful (like kill the bastard).
