  1. Shock, fear, surprise, inaction at the time. One of a hundred people would move in and deal with it. The rest are sheep.

    Spot on.

I have done a couple of active killer seminars (most recetnly at Ohio Krav Maga) and we did a knife attacker drill. The attacker just walked into the crowd and started slashing people silently with a rubber knife - couple of sobering thoughts from that were...

    1) The first victims may or may not communicate what has happened to them to the crowd. I was the first victim and I didn't say a thing. He slashed 5 people before someone said anything.

    2) The folks who try to take down the attacker should assume they will get stabbed/cut and may die. The attacker in our case was a child who was easily overpowered - but a full grown man with a knife could only be safely incapacitated by a ranged weapon like a gun, taser or similar. Yes, you might be able to incapacitate by going hands-on, but doing so without injury would be a stroke of luck.

First thing we teach (@ OKM) with regard to knife defenses: You WILL get cut. In most realistic scenarios, you will get cut, potentially multiple times, before you can even react. Most trained people would rather go up against a gun @ close range than a knife. Knives are scary in that they don't jam, don't run out of ammo, can change direction easily and often, and it takes a whole different psychological state to want to experience the sounds and sensations of cutting someone (up close and personal) versus shooting someone from a distance.

  2. Good luck with your healing process..!

Just completely separated the AC joint of my right/strong arm a few days ago...The lateral end of my clavicle sticks up/out about 1 1/2 inches right now. Apparently surgery for this one is controversial, and it should heal enough to get back to the things I enjoy in a few months (with some permanent deformity). Apparently the AC ligament is the appendix of ligaments.

Learning to do everything left-handed for the time being, and painkillers at least make me forget that it hurts.

  3. Lifting weights doesn't make you a fighter, it only makes you bigger. I've seen plently of muscular tough guys get their asses handed to them, by skinny dudes.

We get plenty of big lifter types who come in the gym and have absolutely no cardio. All you have to do is move and stay out of their reach for 30 seconds and they're winded/done...:D

  4. crap... might need to help look for 6000 rounds 22LR for Boy Scout training....

A little harsh don't you think..?

I wouldn't use more than a pump pellet rifle to keep Boy Scouts in line.

  5. Congrats to you and your family..!

Pups can definitely be challenging. We also forgot how much, er..., 'fun' keeping a pup can be--our last was a Heeler mix. We recently rescued TWO Lab/Border Collie mix pups. Haven't had much of a chance to sit still for about 6 weeks now...Wouldn't trade it, though..!

  6. Bummer about the need to sell but at least it sold. I hope you did ok with it!

Got a good return on it..!

Didn't really need to sell...but for as little as I rode the last couple seasons, it was taking up space and the funds could be better used for other priorities. Maybe a couple of years off the streets will re-ignite the flame.

Still have the Mille for the track...I'll do even more trackdays this year. ;)

  7. I was in the office at the time, but I heard you...Good lungs, lol...

Yes, the freeze is a 'normal' response to yelling, sucker punches, etc. for those that haven't trained to respond. Like, John was saying: people generally don't want to believe that something bad is actually happening. The brain starts scanning itself..."Is this real? Have I been through this before? What did I do". Ever hear someone say "my life flashed before my eyes"? This is what is happening...

This is the reason we do situation drills, usually under stress. The brain says "been there, done that" and the reaction/response time is much quicker.

The other answer (having not been in the room) is that if there was no weapon visible it was, at that point, just a verbal confrontation. I think in reality most wouldn't really do anything other than gawk until there was physical confrontation. Unless it really was a used-car dealer.

...And don't forget the Bystander Effect.

  8. Who else was there? I was "the guy with the accent".

    Coyote - were you there?

Oh, good...that wasn't an speech impediment, then..! (JK)

Yup. Was there today- more physically than mentally, though. Lurked among the instructors and coached with the least experienced bunch.

Was a bit different from the one last month. Hope you got something worthwhile from it.

  9. So, when will I need to fill out the paperwork (since I'm a newb to NFA purchases)?

Once it has been transferred to Dale, he will fill out the Form 4 to transfer it to you, which will then need to be sent to the BATFE (Then you wait some more).
