  1. As some of you know I just bought a 97 silverado z71. The 4 wheel drive is electronic push button but it won't engage. I thought it was the actuator so I replaced it, but I was wrong. When I push the button for 4hi it just blinks. When I put the truck in neutral and press 4lo I can here a noise as if it engages but it doesn't and the light blinks. I've tried idling the truck forward and back but it doesn't engage. I did a search online and it said to check the voltage going to the actuator. I did and it has none. I checked the fuses all good. Another search said I need a new transfer case switch. I went to auto parts warehouse dot com (no spaces) to price one but couldn't find it. I did find a transfer case motor though. WTF is that, is it the same as a transfer case switch? I had bought a repair manual but it only had the floor "stick" to engage the 4x4 not the electronic system so I returned it.

  2. This. Saves you from a blown engine.

Have to know: is it factory cruise, or aftermarket. If it's aftermarket, throw it in the trash.

The factory is all electronic, no vacuum to deal with. The brake switch would be my first though, as I have seen them come apart, and short across, and the cruise unit would think the brakes are off all the time. It's a normally closed switch to the cruise unit, I believe (safest way to do it) and the contacts for the cruise are separate from the brake lights, but in the same (multi pole) switch. The factory unit should be on the firewall, square shaped. If there's a question about whether it is factory, post a pic of it, follow the cable back from the throttle body to find it.

Ok, as far as I can tell its factory well at least the switch is. I try to look tonight after work.

  3. No idea on a fix, but if this happens again...turn off the motor. You will loose power steering and power brakes but you should be able to get it to the side of the road no problem.

Yes I thought of this afterwards, you know how you get in those oh shit moments and forget the simplest things.

  4. Yeah I hit the breaks pretty hard, I was heading towards slower traffic and thought I was going to hit them. I'll double check that the brake lights work.

The first thing I looked at when I got home were the cables and they looked normal. If I pulled them buy hand with the engine running they would reset like they should but obviously I can't really pull it like the cruise would without reving the engine too high.

  5. So I picked up the new ( to me ) 97 silverado today. I was driving down the highway had the cruise control at 80 started coming up on some slower traffic and tapped the brakes then the cruise didn't kick off. The truck started to accelerate like the throttle was stuck. I'd hit the brakes and the truck would slow down but it would accelerate as soon as I let off the brakes. I tried switching it off (the cruise control) and nothing it kept accelerating. I slid it into neutral and the rpms jumped so I put it back in drive. The only other thing I could think to do other than put it back in neutral and let the engine blow was to stomp on the accelerator and hope it breaks free. It worked. A lil while later I decided to see if it was a freak occurrence and set it again, same result. Any idea what the heck is happening or how I can fix it?

  6. Blackwing will let you rent guns then use the money towards the gun if that's what you buy. But Norton Sporting goods has better service and prices.

I also feel that the holster affects the way the gun feels when carried. I love crossbreed holsters I carry my full size h+k P2000 .40 in one and I forget its there. Lately I've been working 9hr days and carrying it IWB no problems. Now if I feel like carrying in my pocket I go with my keltec p3at. Sometimes I'll wear my t-shirt holster and carry anyone of my guns from my .380 upto my wifes Judge. But I mostly use the t-shirt holster on the bike.

  7. A 97 has a 5.7 in it, unless it's had a swap done on it. ;)

I'm sure Brian can work some pretty awesome magic on it anyway!

That's what I thought but they are saying it is stock with the 305. I'll look at it closer Sunday. I bet he can do the magic on it but its 1800+ miles from my house to his shop. Wish I could get it done but the gas would kill me unless I set it up for sometime if I visit home.

  8. I'm buying a 97 silverado 1500 with a 5.3 this weekend. I'm buying from an old couple that are selling it because the wife is having a hip replacement and can't get in + out of the truck. It runs great pretty clean and decent miles for the year. The thing that has my wondering is the guy keeps saying it has a towing performance "chip". I thought "chips" were for diesels so does he mean its had an ecm swap possibly? I did one of those with an 02 gtp I had and it destroyed my pistons. Are you aware of any issues I should look for?
