Went to Skydivecmh.com down in Lancaster about a month ago. It was great, I kind of felt the same way at first but after going it's not at ALL as scary as what you hype it up to be.
Things I learned...
There are 2 main reason a shoot doesn't open. A "line cross", where 2 or more lines to the shoot get crossed and cause teh shoot not to open fully or B a line over, where a line or 2 winds up over the canopy and causes it not to full open. In either case you have a reserve. And from what I read, both are rare, something like 1 in every 1,200 jumps for an individual.
Packing a shoot isn't that high tech or complicated. Apart from keeping the lines straight the biggest thing is how many folds are in it. The more folds, the slower the shoot opens and the less it jerks you after it opens.
The place I went to moves 40-50 people per day (Saturday and Sunday) so 100 people per weekend. To me that's more like an amusement park ride, They literally have people taking off in the front of the hanger while others are landing in the back.
It was amazing although I really doubt you can get the full experience after 1 jump, it's just system overload.
