FTR-Moto Fabrication Techniques Racing reinforced the Yamaha’s frame in front of, behind and on top of the area immediately surrounding the steering head. Furthermore, two additional removable tuning plates are provided with the bike that may be mounted in front of the front engine mount struts to tune the frame’s stiffness.

    Asking $40,000

The 2009 RidersDiscount.com Yamaha YZF-R1 Project Bike is for sale! The bike was prepared by former Factory Yamaha mechanic and chassis builder Seamus Taaffe, who has built bikes for, and worked with, guys like Ben Bostrum, Anthony Gobert, Tom Montano, Steve Rapp, Doug Henry, Roger Lee Hayden and Jason DiSalvo, amongst others. Seamus was exceedingly picky about every aspect of the build, stripping the bike completely to its frame and carefully assembling it to the specification you see here. Weight was saved wherever possible, be it the inclusion of titanium fasteners, the drilling of mounting brackets, down to the removal of unnecessary wires on the YEC kit harness. We even sourced a pair of Marchesini kit forged magnesium wheels, the ones that don’t include the OEM front brake rotor adaptor hubs to cut weight – nothing unnecessary was spared! Where suitable brackets could not be found, we fabricated our own, heat-shielding was added on coolant hoses where they came close to the engine/bodywork and wheel changes were made easier, not only by beveling the brake pads, but also via an underslung captive Brembo rear brake caliper.

A significant amount of time went into researching components, most noticeable of which, is the reinforced headstock area on the frame. We noticed that the AMA Factory Yamahas, as well as the Sterilgarda WSBK Yamahas, had some extra plates welded onto their frames. As a result, over the winter of 2009/2010, we had the R1’s frame braced to the same specifications as the WSBK Yamahas by British-based FTR Moto – Fabrication Techniques Racing. In addition to having built the frame on Ben Spies’ championship-winning YZF-R1, FTR is heavily involved in providing frames and complete motorcycles to race-winning Moto2 teams as well. Öhlins was used all around with gas-charged fork cartridges and a TTX rear shock to provide, what Kurtis Roberts called, the best handling superbike he’s ever ridden.

The R1’s engine has been built and maintained by Carry Andrews of Hypercycle to AMA American SuperBike specifications. An MB motorsports kit radiator paired with Samco hoses cools the engine while it breathes through a BMC CRF filter and exhausts spent gases through Akrapovič’s latest Evolution 2 full-titanium exhaust system. Every rider has complimented the R1’s crossplane engine for its exceptionally smooth yet, arm-pulling power delivery off the corners. We took that and threw in a YEC catalog’s worth of kit parts including cams, valve springs, gaskets &etc. for even more arm-pulling power. Of course, maintaining such a beast was critical, so after every weekend, brake fluid and engine oil were replaced with Brembo HTC 64T and Motul 300V, respectively. The cooling system is filled using de-ionized water with Redline Water Wetter additive.

The entire chassis is wrapped in SharkSkinz “kit” bodywork with the Team RidersDiscount.com custom paint job by Andrew Swenson Design. This kit bodywork features reshaped intake snorkels, larger, unobstructed ram air tubes and a reshaped plenum situated in front of the entrance to the airbox for greater flow-thru capacity and, consequently, more engine power. A large-capacity Gmeiner Racing Parts hand made aluminum fuel tank with quick-release cap is used in place of the OEM item. Its aft portion is also part of the specially-shaped seat styled to Ben Bostrum’s preferences using a SharkSkinz seat pan.

The bike has passed AMA American SuperBike tech inspection and has every bolt drilled for safety wire as required by AMA and WERA rules. Almost no expense was spared for this bike; from the choice of engine builder to suspension components to the use of titanium fasteners throughout – we used the best equipment we could find.

A total $50,503.59 in top-shelf aftermarket parts alone, grace this Yamaha YZF-R1 for a total retail value of $62,893.59 before taxes and labor! In addition to that, countless hours of skilled assembly (100+), track testing and set up have gone into honing this motorcycle to be a true track weapon.

  3. To a painter, be his media a canvas, a brick wall or, in this case - bodywork, the surface on which the paint is applied makes all the different in the final product. To that end, SharkSkinz has no equal. There are no pinholes to be filled or rough joining surfaces to sand smooth - a few minutes spent with fine-grit sandpaper is all it takes to prep SharkSkinz bodywork for a gorgeous looking bike. That's why the best looking bikes wear SharkSkinz fairings!

    painted_675_bodywork-4.jpg

  4. The SharkSkinz name is legendary when it comes to motorcycle bodywork and that’s not just because they’ve been the chief bodywork supplier to top AMA teams for years, but because the quality is readily apparent from fit to prepping for paint to durability. And factory teams are picky about the quality of the parts they use – nothing but the best will do! We’re convinced too – this is the same bodywork that we use on all of our own racebikes.

All SharkSkinz race (and street!) bodywork is made using their proprietary blend of epoxy resins, primers and woven cloth for a perfect fit with no filing, cutting or MacGyver antics required - straight out of the box. In addition, they make it easy by including any specialized hardware, spacers or brackets when it’s required so you’re not up until three in the morning fabricating brackets to hang the bodywork properly when you should be resting for your day at the track!

Many art masterpieces have been lost over the ages because the canvas they were painted on couldn’t stand the test of time. To relate it to motorcycles, why would you skimp on bodywork if you’re going to pay good money to have it painted beautifully? SharkSkinz is perfect for custom paint applications because they are finished at the factory with a urethane primer – not a thick gel coat (which is used because it easily fills poorly molded bodywork!) that can crack or peel over time. Your expensive paint job won’t spider web or show stress cracks after the first time you ride with it on – something we’ve seen in other bodywork out there. Your painter too, will be thankful since SharkSkinz requires minimal prep time – all it needs is a little scuffing and it’s ready for paint.

We all know crashing isn’t fun but it’s here where we’ve found another aspect of SharkSkinz that we really like – the fact that it doesn’t turn to dust when your bike hits the ground. Because it’s flexible, when stress is applied to one area of the bodywork – like the upper fairing, for example, you’re less likely to find fractures where it mates with the belly pan after a crash. Again, this goes back to the quality of materials and we can’t say enough about how good this bodywork really is. It’s easy to install, easy to paint and it stands up to crashing better than just about anything else on the market.

SharkSkinz motorcycle bodywork is sold as either a complete kit or individual replacement pieces – so you can start with a completely fresh set of bodywork, or simply replace that which has lost its luster. Some models are available with cut-outs for OEM headlights and taillights. Whether this is your first set of bodywork, or your fifteenth – you won’t be disappointed with what you get straight out of the box.

SharkSkinz fairings are not yet available on our website. Call Mike at 866.931.6644 ext 804 to get a set of this bodywork shipped to you fast. If you have any questions, please send us an email: FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM is the address with SHARKSKINZ in the subject line along with the year and model of the bike you’re riding and we’ll get back to you right away.

Some manufacturers don’t tell you that you need to fabricate brackets or source odd spacers to make their bodywork fit, not SharkSkinz. Here, they’ve included quick take-off upper fairing stay brackets and spacers. This makes getting the uppers on and off much easier.
    bodywork_sharkskinz_bmw_s1000rr_8.jpg

Optional anti-draft kits are also available.
    bodywork_sharkskinz_suzuki_gsxr_1000_k9_

It’s possible to order SharkSkinz with or without pre-drilled Dzus fasteners. We prefer to have them installed at the factory since they line up perfectly.
    bodywork_sharkskinz_bmw_s1000rr_10.jpg

Having this done beforehand saves a LOT of time and eliminates any error in alignment by the installer; everything fits together perfectly.
    bodywork_sharkskinz_triumph_daytona_675_

Another detail that’s often over-looked by other bodywork manufacturers are fitment issues that require you to cut or file the bodywork just to get it to fit. Sharkskinz makes sure you don’t have to! Take for example this cutout in the lower fairing for the OEM coolant hose. It’s little differences like these that can add up to big savings in time and frustration when installing your bodywork!
    bodywork_sharkskinz_triumph_daytona_675_

All of this adds up to a motorcycle that looks excellent when it’s painted!

  5. With a brake light and turn signal flasher all built into one design, Dynamic Moto Power Powergrid integrated LED taillights have the kind of brightness that will get you noticed! What sets DMP Powergrid kits apart from other aftermarket integrated taillights is their lens designs which are specifically tailored to reflected the most light possible outwards via a mirrored LED surface finish. That, and the high-quality polycarbonate lens housing features a topography that further enhances light output so other road users are better able to see you. The wire harness employs a factory-type brake light connector and you simply need to re-use the OEM hardware for installing a DMP taillight kit. You’ll be able to eliminate your OEM turn signals too so you can easily clean up the rear end of your bike.

To assure proper functionality, all DMP light kits are tested at the factory, twice: once during production and again before final packaging. Easy-to-understand installation instructions are also included with each kit.

Some touring gear we’ve encountered can be rather inflexible and can make you feel like you’re trapped under layers of tarpaulin, especially in the knees. Alpinestars has addressed this issue with their patented Vector knee joint construction to allow plenty of flexion for comfortable, uninhibited movement on the bike.

    alpinestars_durban_gore-tex_jacket_and_pants_4.jpg

Two waterproof pockets are housed on the front of the jacket. Keeping wind off the center of the chest, the main zipper features a front closure flap. There’s also a pair of waterproof pockets on the pants just above the knees.

A changing mat, fleece-lined helmet bag and a boot mud bag are included as well, making it easier to keep dirty equipment from tarting up the bag’s interior.

    alpinestars_xl_transition_gear_bag-5.jpg

Strips of perforated tarpaulin panels run along the upper and outer sides of the bag for ventilation. This helps your gear dry out and prevents bad odors from becoming too much of a problem.

  10. Yet another innovative solution from Constructors Racing Group, the Arrow Mirrors are light, stylish and functional – the way aftermarket motorcycle mirrors should be. Each CRG Arrow mirror is made up of 28 individual parts and, CRG claims, its aerodynamic styling gives a superior view of the road behind you. The patented mirror’s metal components are precision machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum and assembled with high-quality stainless steel hardware. At 4.8oz on our scales, this is probably lighter than your bike’s OEM mirror. All machined components are anodized black to go with just about any modern motorcycle with 7/8” handlebars.

CRG Arrow Mirrors are not yet available on our website. Call Mike at 866.931.6644 ext 804 to order. Sold individually, you can also email us with any questions you may have – send those to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM with CRG ARROW MIRROR in the subject line and we’ll get back with you fast.

Arrow Mirrors are adjustable directly behind the reflective element itself as well as on the post that holds it on your motorcycle’s handlebar.

    crg_arrow_bar_end_mirror_black_1.jpg

Arrow bar-end mirrors require only 10mm of handlebar space for a reliable mounting. On some motorcycles, this may require grips and other controls be moved inboard slightly.

    crg_arrow_bar_end_mirror_black_2.jpg

While it’s recommended that these aftermarket bar-end mirrors are to be attached at the end of each handlebar, the handcuff style clamps allow you to position it inboard of the grips if you desire.

    crg_arrow_bar_end_mirror_black_3.jpg

The design lends itself to a wide variety of positions. You can hang it low.

    crg_arrow_bar_end_mirror_black_6.jpg

Mount the stalk high with the mirror in a vertical position.

    crg_arrow_bar_end_mirror_black_4.jpg

Or, mount it inboard of the grips, though we’re not sure why anyone would want to do this!

  11. Effective communications can be an excellent addition to any ride, and if you’re really picky about sound quality, take a look at Sena’s SMH10 Bluetooth motorcycle communications system. A single SMH10 can be matched with up to three other SMH10’s so you can communicate with them at a range of up to 900 meters away via a Bluetooth intercom system. In addition to real-time two-way comms, you can also hook up a mobile phone, GPS navigation device and/or an MP3 player – all via Bluetooth v2.1+EDR Class 1 protocol. Each device you attach has a separate volume control, so you can set levels depending on your needs, and you’ll be able to control each device separately with the intuitive jog dial on the helmet-mounted unit. If you’ve yet to upgrade your audio player or GPS to Bluetooth compatible models, you can also use the included 3.5mm audio jack to hardwire it directly to the headset.

Positioning the SMH10 on most helmets is a non-issue with two mounting schemes included with each communicator: clamp-style or stick-on style. And with the flexible, yet sturdy, microphone boom, properly positioning the pick-up mic is no problem at all. Low-profile stereo headphones fit into the ear pocket recesses of most helmets and shouldn’t bother those with even the biggest of ears. The headphones are also Velcro-backed and a pair of sticky-backed Velcro pads facilitate their installation should your helmet’s liner material not be suitable for keeping them in proper position.

Sena Communication systems are not yet available on our website. To order, call Mike at 866.931.6644 x 804 or send a note to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM with SENA SMH10 in the subject line – please be sure to specify if you want a single unit or a paired set, and we’ll get back to you right away.

Sena SMH10 Bluetooth Stereo Headset kits come with a headset unit and helmet mounting scheme, DC power charger, USB power cable, cigarette charger, 3.5mm stereo cable jack and mounting accessories like a sticky-back adaptor and Velcro pads plus all tools required for installation. If you order the dual-SMH10 kit, you get two of everything.

Headphone wires are smartly-placed at the back of the headset’s base so tucking away excess cable is made easier.

    sena_smh10_helmet_headset-3.jpg

The SMH10’s microphone boom is stable enough to be used on open-face helmets too.

    sena_smh10_helmet_headset-4.jpg

A USB port at the top aft of the communicator facilitates charging and firmware updates to expand the device’s already impressive list of capabilities. The jog dial and control button are both easily manipulated with a gloved hand.

Made with a 1.2-1.4mm leather chassis that’s perforated from the neck down to the knees on the front, with additional ventilation on the back and sides, the Charger one-piece leather suit is ready for duty, and it’s suitable for duty even in the hottest of climates. To stand up to the wear and tear that comes with riding fast, Alpinestars tech employs an advanced multiple-stitch suit construction that’s designed to stay together in a sliding situation. Not only are seams tacked together with more than a single run of thread, but the stitching is also arranged in a way to protect it from exposure to the road in the event of a crash. This difficult construction method adds a significant degree of abrasion resistance to the suit. Furthermore, Alpinestars’ best CE-certified GP armor is used in the knees, elbows and shoulders to attenuate impact forces should your riding get a little too out of control. There’s also a pair of PE-padding inserts in the chest compartment which can be easily upgraded with Alpinestars Bionic chest armor for additional impact protection.

Looking after rider comfort (aside from the extensive perforations), a removable mesh liner is used on the inside to make getting into and out of the suit a snap. This liner separates skin from the leather, which also makes it easer for the wearer to move around on the bike. This, combined with strategically-placed stretch accordion leather and Kevlar panels, further enhance rider agility. And to avoid chaffing, soft neoprene surrounds are sewn on the cuffs and collar where the leather would otherwise come into contact with your skin.

You can read more about the Alpinestars Charger Suit on our website, then call Mike at 866.931.6644 ext 804 for expert sizing guidance and fast shipping. Leather stretch panels like the one shown here behind the shoulder are also found just above the knees and at the lower back.
