  1. Every time you say "that's my next bike," I know that bike will never see the inside of your garage. What happened to the Victory or the Wing and 2 up with the misses?

She could care less, so that was for sure an easy decision. Who knows if maybe one will get added to the garage in the future, but if I can only have one bike it would be an ADV style machine.

  2. Been on the fence about what my next bike was gonna be, thought a Super Tenere or an FJ-09 might be in the cards. But I just could not get the latest 650 V-strom out of my head, so I went out to the Pony on July 3rd and bought the only XT which they had only had on the floor for 4 days. Kyle was so awesome to deal with, and the sale and overall process was pretty painless. I am quite the fan of the Stroms, and thought it was finally time to go with the 650 version for a change. In short......I am loving it, the ole trusty 1000 will be going up for sale soon. Less is more for me the more trips I take and the more I ride, and I think I may have this girl for a while.

Well that's horseshit, trying to attach a pic and it keeps having upload error.

  3. I have traveled all over the United states on 2 wheels "many times off the beaten path" and have never ran out of gas, just seems like a worry over nothing to me........just sayin. Maybe the bikes I pick have a better range than some, or perhaps I just plan better or have been lucky at times too?

  4. I've ran out of gas once. 2 days ago on the sumo. I thanked baby Jesus for the reserve option on the petcock all the way to the nearest station. 75 miles to a tank is severely anemic. Without a low fuel indicator, and varying mpg's pending my right wrist, I may consider a spare fuel cell of some sort for it.

    Bigger tank. ;)

  5. Towing is just two motorcycles, one or two ATVs, and maybe occasionally jet skis (sold mine, but never know...). Not much at all, and not very often. Fuel mileage is better than the 4Runner and Danger Ranger by about 1-3 MPG. That made me chuckle. Keep hearing how bad they are for fuel mileage. I'd say for a 4WD they're pretty good.

Actually Ben I think a Jeep would be perfect for you and what you ultimately want it for, they are "much more" reliable then some here are giving them credit. Yeah they are ridiculous expensive for what you get, but it is a Jeep thing. ;)

  6. I ran out in NM on a trip with the wife. We got a little lost looking for a ghost town on a round trip that was already close to my maximum range so I ran out about 10 miles shy of a gas stop on the way back. I carried a 32oz. MSR bottle with gas under both panniers at the time, so I dumped both into the tank and got to a gas station no problem.

The MSR bottles work good, and fit into the Agri-Supply tool tubes.

Around Ohio you have to be forgetful or have a broken gauge to run out....gas stops are just too plentiful around these parts so I don't carry fuel here.

Yup.....but the rotopax and MSR bottles only look bad ass mounted on V-Stroms and the likes. ;)

  7. Those look quite functional.  I want to avoid the military look.

I'll go over to Adventure Riders and have a look around.

I was thinking more like a PVC pipe with a couple of fuel bottles

stuck in it, and with a cap.  Mounting and all is part of what I

was wondering about.  Those off road guys are pretty creative.

I'll have to see what they have that they may have adapted for

the road on their touring bikes.

    .

Off-road and touring are quite different obviously, one is typically "off-road and the beaten path" and another is typically on-road. ;) Gotta say I agree with the question asked "have you ever ran out of gas"? Roto-Pax is the best system there is, short of just going with a bigger tank. Usually not hard to find gas for a fill up unless you are just extremely remote, and I am betting you will be more than ready to get off your current bike for a bit when it is time for a fill up. My V-Strom is extremely comfy and I have a 200 plus mile range, but I am still more than ready to get off the bike for a bit after a re-fuel. I would worry more about staying hydrated, over expanding my fuel capacity. Get a GPS if you don't already, that "find fuel" feature can be a life saver.

  8. How heavy did the Vision feel during the test ride? Stops, turns, parking lot maneuvers, etc..

Amazingly nimble and very maneuverable, for a bike that big and heavy it is very balanced and easy to ride. I am pretty much sold on it as a bagger/tourer were I to go that route, I was left very impressed by it. The ground clearance for cornering is excellent, and the bike has built in tip over wings which literally keeps anything from getting damaged or falling over flat in a tip over.

  9. Well.....the Wifey and I stopped at the Victory demo day today, got to take out a Cross Country Tour and then a Vision. HATED the Cross Country Tour, unless I just got a bad one or something. It had clunky shifting, serious heat coming off engine up into all over my body, there was quite a bit of rattling/vibrations coming from the front end and the fairing, the fueling seemed very lean, and the steering was wooden and very unresponsive. Basically I have never felt so disconnected on a bike in my life, and I really tried to like it. However........the Vision was a whole other experience, I swear I was on a Gold Wing with a big ass twin engine powering it. Very responsive, very smooth, loads of torque and get up and go, no strange noises or vibrations, and the bike just simply handles better than it should. I came out feeling overall very impressed with the Vision, and I have always thought they were unique and interesting machines. They have quite a following, and now I can see as to why. I could honestly see myself adding one to the garage, and the Wifey seemed to really enjoy being on the back. :) I really want to get her riding with me, I have a lot of places I want to take her that I am confident she would enjoy.
