  1. ^ I've noticed that they JUST started charging a late fee for gift certs around the AMA weekend.

I transitioned into the "frequent rider" category by signing up for 4 trackdays/year, so I lucked out and didn't pay a late signup fee.

Last time I paid for one they charged me the $20 late fee.  They did refund it when I called them but I was charged it up front.  I'm not too concerned about them selling out this coming week so I'll just take my gift certificates to the registration desk.  I have done 7 track days  there so far this year (plus two WERA race days) so I'm also in the no late fee category.

  2. it just did for me - all upper case "FORUM2014" and got 10 bucks off. Enough for a double cheeseburger, fries, and a shake on the way home!

Maybe it is because I buy gift certificates.

*edit - yep, that is the reason.

  3. I'm planning on going one of the two days weather permitting. Whichever day the weather looks best, at the moment it looks like Wednesday. Really hoping my new rearsets arrive in time!

Wednesday doesn't look best from where I'm setting. ;)

  4. I have to do at least three more days to get my ten days in so I can qualify for the drawing for the free track days next year.  At least that is the excuse I that I am using to justify all of the money that I am spending.  :D

  5. I will throw this out there for the guys with little exp at Mid O. This is Indy Car weekend at the track. Indy leaves a lot of rubber on the track and unless there's a good heavy rain to clean it up some prior to PTR the track will be different than you are used to. Listen in the riders meeting and pay attenion to the coaches and the track.

That being said, I may come out one day with my new track bike to take her for my first ride on it.

New brand, shift pattern, tires, set up than I'm used to and I've not ridden it yet so will likely run I if I make it out. Hell I might even run N for a few sessions, no shame in that.

Thank you, I hadn't even thought about the Indy cars.  With that being said, I will be getting used to a new shift pattern as well.

  6. I'm hoping to, watching the weather.  I'll be in Intermediate as well.  I'm only running 1:46's so I'm still a little ways from my bump I'm guessing.   :(

That being said, I would love to get to the point that I can ride in Advanced sometime this year.  :D

  7. Tires are 80% mental and the rest is in your head. I have run times faster than a lot of Novice times at Mid-Ohio on Q2s with a big bore twin (RC8R). I think :36s...

The fact is simple. Race tires will tend to hold up better to race pace. Think about this. Race tires if not heated take a very long time to come to temp. Street tires are designed to come to temp fast and will get greasy at higher temps. Tires like the Q3 is a street/track compound. These tend to give somewhat best of both worlds.

Here is my thought on tires. Can you race on street tires? Yes! Can you get to where you want to be on street tires? No. I couldn't run the pace I was running for even just 6 laps on street tires. No way. I also believe that OSU who won all of his Novice races on his R1 could not do it on street tires. The heat and abuse that you put into a tire at race pace and for the sustained amount of time will net poor results. Race compounds are the way to go for RACING. Track days are a different story.

But another twist... Don't buy Q3s for track days and run race DOTs when racing. Why? Setup. You running street tires at the track days will be fine. But the setup may be totally different when putting on race tires.

If you have a geny and warmers, buy race tires if you want to be serious with racing. Your times are not where they would be for race tires yet. So, we need to tow you down to :40 and lower to warrant race tires.

Hope that makes sense. You can run almost anything and find examples of people that do well on whatever you feel is correct. I've seen plenty of guys with bikes over 10k miles and never changed the oil. Does that mean it is the best thing to do? You decide...

Makes perfect sense. Thank you. I will wait until I wear out my current set and the new pair I have waiting before switching.
