You don't have to eat a donut for it to be the best donut evar.

Interesting, so it isn't really spelled donut, it's spelled Doughnut.  F' that, I am sticking with donut.

That doesn't answer how you know about it!  :p

I use Royal Purple synthetic chain lubricant.  Goes on clear and dries like clear coat.  You have to wait overnight for it to completely dry.  I love it, no sling and it keeps my chain looking brand new.

Let it dry and yes; that is some good stuff!

  3. Fuck a bunch of statistics, doctors and laws.  Ever watched someone die from a bad batch/overdose?  You want to risk ending your life like that...go ahead.  But first go far far away to an uninhabited area where you'll have a few days to yourself.  I'm good with that.  Really.  I just hate to think that someone who really cares about you has to suffer watching you go.

    Go ahead...ask.

  4. The real kicker will be when someone decides to e-check motorcycles.  Considering some of the successes of AMA, ABATE and other groups in fighting helmet laws, it'll get REAL interesting.  Riders don't like government interference to begin with.

So, I received a letter from E-check stating I passed my test for our Pathfinder.  The funny thing was I didn't take it to get tested.  As I read further I was told my vehicle was scanned on several occasions and the emissions were within tolerable limits.  I have never heard of an E-Check remote scan test, a few weeks later my registration came in the mail and it showed I passed the test.  So, I did some digging and found that Ohio has been doing these tests since 2012.  Apparently they have mobile units that travel all over, park at an entrance ramp on a major highway and scan every vehicle that goes by.  I would really like to see how all that info is calculated as people are driving by at 65 mph.  I don't know if I like this or not.  Any time a government agency is scanning me without my knowledge, I get a little uneasy.

This thread has had me thinking.  So I live in s.w. Ohio.  I'm driving through the area in question during one of their little scan fests.  Do I get a pass/fail/gfy letter?  Is it just those counties up there, or is it state wide?  If it's state wide, what are they doing with all this info?

I remember the EPA testing facilities when they ran down here.  Faulty, improperly maintained/calibrated equipment, poorly trained staff.  I was working in a Pontiac dealer where we had an analyzer to test cars we repaired to pass failed testing.  We actually got training from the test equipment mfr.  We also did a pre-repair test to establish a baseline to judge results we got after repairs and tuning.  I'll guess 30% to 50% of the baseline results we obtained showed passing when the county facility failed it.  There were "discussions".  The county would then retest.  Amazingly the car would pass and no one had touched it.  I think they knew their initial results were off.  I think $$$ influenced results.  Government $$$.

I took a sick day on Monday and have been WFH the rest of the week.  Fucking plague is kicking my ass with a runny nose, cough and low grade fever.  I'm ready to eat a 45 ACP.

That'll just give you one more hole for the snot to drain out of...doesn't help.

  7. I'll second Tpoppa's last post above.  It appears that instead of riding herd on big business they're out to fuck the little guy (you and me).

One of their projects is to make E-15 (or higher ethanol content) the fuel of choice.  If you don't own a flexfuel vehicle you will be spending $$$ or forced into buying a new vehicle that is alcohol friendly.

On a personal note I just don't like any government interfering in my life...motor vehicles, guns, my home.  Not completely true; I actually fucking hate it.

The stuff is miserably expensive but check out Devcon 11770.  It's a white ceramic infused epoxy coating designed to seal metal in high wear environments.  I've used a similar product from them years ago to rebuild bearing surfaces in aluminum and the stuff is amazing.

Bingo!  And I have access through a former employer to enough to do it...even a former employee who would help (since he works with it on a daily basis) to effect the best repair possible.

Thanks for bringing that up! :)

  9. Looking for anyone's experience with an older cast mag that does not want to seal to the tire bead.  I can see the pitting and corrosion on the rim where the bead mounts and should seal.  Certain methods are immediately out.  Tire "sealer" that glues the bead to the rim is one; it may be too far gone for that and you ever broke a bead and tried to clean up that resulting mess?  A new rim is another one I'd rather not mess with.

A definite solution is installing a tube inside the tubeless tire.  That's not how the wheel was designed, and I'd like to avoid that.  In the past that solution created an out of balance/vibration problem.

    What experience have you had?

  10. Imagine...

Sitting in a sidecar attached to a Goldwing.  Your ass is maybe 8 inches off the ground, running what felt like 70 mph through downtown Cincinnati.  The Goldwing's rider is still half-drunk and running to the right of his lane.  Cars parked on the street.  A car door swings open as you approach it...know those red marker lights they put on the inside of early '70s Lincoln car doors?  It appears at eye level.  Rider doesn't swerve or slow down...just screams "DUCK!!!"  I felt a kind of a whoosh as we passed it.

To this day I will not get into a sidecar.  I am thinking about hooking one up to my pan for the wife to enjoy... :p

Good on you; times spent with grandchildren are awesome.  He'll be a better man for it.

  12. CL is getting to be a back alley hole where anything goes.  For example, "clean title" apparently means there's no kitchen table stains on it.  I've got to ride along and check out a few in the last two years, and people don't know or care if it's a salvage title or a bill of sale, or even if the vin matches the machine they're selling.  Question them about any discrepancies and it can get shitty in a hurry.

Harley Davison has an amazing public image, and an excellent marketing department.

They have convinced everyone that Harleys are manly, American, freedom machines, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a communist pussy.

How many people do you know who own a Harley? I can think of fewer than 10. Hoe many people do you know who own a Harley t-shirt, pillow, blanket, vest, adult diaper...  I know a hundred.

Yeah they do.  There's several guys around here who have the vin number of every Harley they've ever own tattooed on some part of their body.  Can you spell brand loyalty?

I do not have all the Harley foo-foo.  Owning two of them, I can't afford it and wouldn't advertise for them anyway after those damned twin cams.

Guys at work (union shop) ask me why I don't buy a Harley. Pretty simple, I tell them, they don't make a bike I want. The bikes they do make aren't any better than their Japanese counterparts and they're more expensive. So why would I buy less bike for more money? Why should I take a shot on the chin and buy a bike I don't want because the only American motorcycle companies won't even attempt to compete in terms of performance?

If I were a cruiser guy, which I may become again, I'd look at the Indian scout. Great motor in those bikes.

Good motor for Indian; I hear they ride and handle well too.

Have you looked at the V-Rods?  Local has one that's batshit fast and handles good too.  He does have a ton of money tied up in it though.

Thanks it doesn't leak I'll probably just use the rust cleaner

Rinse it really good after that.  Use some sort of oil to coat the inside; it'll flash rust fairly quick again.

I've cleaned rust out by loading a length of small chain or a handful of #10 or 12 unplated lockwashers in a tank, wrap the tank with blankets and put it in the dryer.  Add more blankets as needed to keep tank from moving around and run it without heat for an hour or so.  Remove the hill-billy media, wash out and oil.

Yes; my wife spends a lot of time shaking her head... :)
