Lowering preload does not make the springs less stiff, in fact what is known as preload doesn't actually "preload" the springs at all. All it does is lift or lower the front end for a given amount of weight. 5mm in on the adjusters will raise the front end 5mm. The adjustment is more accurately termed "ride height".

Mine broke off on 270 at rush hour and I actually caught it with my left hand! It was fun downshifting and coming to a stop without being able to use the clutch. I went to a zoo the other day. The only animal they had was one small dog. It was a shih-tzu.
