  1. Okay I'll rephrase. A Canon P & S will do 99% of anything you'd need. I even know nikon photogs who use the canon G10 as a backup.
  2. Another thought is the Canon G10 or the G9 (older so better price.) They are canons top of the line P & S cameras and many pro photogs carry one in their kit for a backup and for those times when an event is moving fast enough that you need to be able to use one camera/lens combo and get work done. They have a hotshoe for an external flash so you can do many more complicated lighting shots that the other P & S cameras won't be able to do. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=17624
  3. I'll tell ya that if you want a DSLR because you think its gonna get you better pictures then your probably looking in the wrong direction. Even my Canon S2 IS from a few years ago that costs about $250 takes better (sharper and easier to take) shots than my $4000 worth of canon pro gear if I compare vacation pictures and other snap shots. The P & S camera will do 99% of the things you'll need on a daily basis. DSLR's really shine when your trying to take pics that show depth of field and other neat things that they do:-) Now having said that if your wanting to get into photography as a hobby and learn to use a DSLR properly its gonna take some time, lots of reading, and you'll end up buying a lot of gear and having a lot of fun. If you stick with Canon or even Nikon and buy the gear used (especially the lenses) you can be almost guaranteed to get your money back in the used market. You might even make a little bit if you buy at a really good price.
  4. If you want into the DSLR world then the Canon 40D can be had for very cheap now that newer models are out and unless your planning to shoot indoor sports for ESPN the 40D will be far more than you'll ever need. I'm a Canon guy also myself, but Nikon makes some nice products. It really comes down to what you like using better since they both have different button locations and menu systems.
  5. This. I leave streaks all over c-bus.
  6. Very true, but its still got a wire coming from the wall to a transformer box then a wire to the laptop. It just uses a "for EURO only" part number for the power cable.
  7. I'm gonna guess she had it plugged in to a wall and dropped the transformer into the tub? It still would have taken a bit of time for the right stuff to get wet. Just dropping the laptop into the tub with the external cord submerged would have just blown up the transformer then popped a breaker if the transformer box wasn't in the tub. The laptop without and external cord would have just been one very wet and probably not functional laptop. Very sucky way to die, but really she couldn't have been very smart in the first place so yeah Darwin wins.
  8. I've tried everyone around town and found that Mcalister's Photoworks on Sawmill is the best quality. They cost like 10-20% more per print, but its worth it when I can go behind the counter and personally adjust my digital prints on the calibrated monitor thats connected to the lab printer. They are the only place in town that can do my astrophotography stuff right. I don't mess around when I'm getting those prints done because by the time its ready to print I've put 20-30 hours of work taking the shot, stacking, processing, and doing final framing and editing before I hand it over to the printer.
  9. If I had wanted to be real creepy I'd have worn a cuddly pedobear hat and been giving out candy.
  10. Tractor

    Giggity

That is a sweet shot. Especially with the moisture condensing over the wings.
  11. I was the creepy dude with the big camera:-) And no car to race
  12. If you do actually take it on trails DO NOT put a K&N kit on it. I've seen several Jeep engines get killed because those kits will drink mud. If you do any intake kit on a Jeep do it right and do a snorkle:-)
  13. 2.73 rear end? Wow I'd lower that along with tires and you'll be real happy. I'd say thats a great time with those gears though. PICS http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68313
  14. It was lots of fun trying to shoot moving, speeding up cars. I don't get out to CR stuff much and this time I just happened to get lucky. I also really wanted to get out and play with my new lenses. 16-35mm F2.8L and 70-200 F2.8L for the photogs. Now that I got to use them for a day I really like them. I put my consumer 28-135 IS USM lens on for the really close burnouts and for the last few shots with the guardrail in the way and you can really see the difference in quality. The IS of that cheap lens didn't help at all in making better pics and probably made them worse.
  15. Here's my CF card dump of the track day. No edits done to anything other than resizing for web viewing. If anything happens to be interesting to you let me know and I can clean it up and make a high res file available. http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/EWhytsell/Drag%20Way%2042%206-27-09/?start=0 I'm not very web savvy and there's like 250 images or I'd have linked each one here.
  16. Couldn't you drop your rear tire pressure a little? Sure it will increase the rolling resistance, but it can't be as bad as not getting the takeoff that you were hoping for due to spinning or going to easy on it. Typically in the 4x4 world 15lbs gets you about twice the foot print as 30lbs. So I'd think you could take the tires down 5-10 lbs and see some results.
  17. Depending on whether jeep kept with the old ways or not you should have 3.73 to 1 diff gears. If you've upsized your tires from stock and want to make it feel like its got the same power as before you can regear to 4.10 to 1. This will of course give you more take off power at the expense of top end speed, but its a brick with wheels and thats probably not your biggest concern. If you plan on getting a lift and bigger tires down the road you might want to just deal with it for now and wait until you know what your going to do since gears are a pretty expensive part of a 4x4 mod due to having to buy 2 sets.
  18. I do, I just can't bring myself to trust anyone to do honest work to my cars. I don't even care so much about quality or anything its just that any time I do get lazy and take one somewhere they give me a bunch of BS about what it needs. So I do everything from oil changes to complete build ups. Not saying any of the CR sponsors do this to me. Actually I've never taken a car to anyone on CR's list I usually just go to the first place thats close to me while I'm driving around at work.
  19. Oh course if all else fails just set it to the little guy running on the dial and enjoy:-)
  20. Yes TV mode is a great mode for controlling the action in a picture. I'd try a speed of 400-500/th sec and see how that goes at first then adjust from there. Shutter speed depends on a few things, but mainly what your trying to get out of the picture. Slower shutter speeds like 1/80th to 1/200th sec will give you more blur around things that are moving in the picture such as tires. The higher shutter speeds will stop the action if your going for a shot that will show the detail of the tires wrinkling during a launch. When panning and trying to convey motion using shutter speed it will depend greatly on the lens focal length. A lens like the 28-135mm will need a slower speed at 28 than at 135 to show motion. This is because of the magnification. It not only makes objects bigger, but also amplifies any motion. Also if your using a long focal length typically you should always keep the shutter speed equal to or faster than the length (ie 200mm lens should go no slower shutter than 1/200th sec.) This will help you get the sharpest shots possible. Of course you can disregard that info while your using a tripod. Need any other info just ask.
  21. Correct my wife has some people who by order of higher powers are allowed to cash such checks. If they don't have that approval then it doesn't get done and even then she usually covers her self by making the next guy up the ladder sign off too.
  22. This is correct. My wife confirmed it as banking law since she is a bank manager. If the "AND" is on there then the check will require both parties signatures. Now some tellers might miss it and cash it or might let it go, but if you put it in the ATM then its gonna get caught almost 100% because all those checks get reviewed by a department and you'll end up getting debited and cause some big issues for yourself.
  23. I've had lots of insurance checks over the years, but never one made payable to me and a repair shop. Thats just retarded. I've also always just cashed the checks and bought a nice toy since I never have a car I care about. The last example I just did last night. Check for $2500 so I blew the thing 2 camera lenses.
  24. Hehe those are the last console games I played.
