  1. Someone's watched too much of Mighty Car Mods... I bought a LeCar, hoping to convert it to a Renault Turbo5. Unfortunately, I ended up scrapping a hacked-up FWD french fry of a car with a whole lotta obscure bits from Europe that I paid too much to ship them to Ohio. I WISH I SAW THIS CL AD SOONER!!!
  2. From a business perspective, there are a lot of: 1) New companies, growing organically. Either standing on their own, or being bolstered by Private Equity/Venture Capital investments. 2) regional/national/international companies investing in the area. Amazon, Retail, Honda, Medical... 3) Major IT/Data Management/call center investments 3) GOVERNMENT/HIGHER EDU/HEALTHCARE INVESTMENT. State capital, major universities, hospital chains 4) Business infrastructure support - think of not just the main companies, but all the service industries/sales/technicians that help those companies, and the OTHER feeder firms that help THOSE companies. I can tell you a lot of people I know moving into UA/Dublin areas are sales/business development people that essentially work-at-home, but travel. Enhancements to John Glenn make it a lot easier to get around the nation from C'Bus. These folks used to live in NYC, Philly, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Cali, DC, etc.....why the F would you keep paying double to triple for housing and cost-of-living when for the same salary you can still do bizness and put way more in the bank? You're seeing a lot of government/private sector collaboration that helps bolster the local and regional economy as well (Columbus 2020, Columb*US, etc) Really, if you're going to choose to live in the Midwest you're here because of two things: 1) Family ties 2) Low cost of living Columbus does the whole "midwest" thing better than most cities, like Detroit, Chicago, Indy, Cleveland/Cincy, etc...
  3. +1. Believe me, I was a naysayer for the last couple of years; the economic fundamentals are still too strong for it to slow down. There may be a correction - note, NOT a recession - but good areas to live will always be popular.
  4. http://www.autonews.com/article/20170531/FINANCE_AND_INSURANCE/170539958/new-car-loans-lasting-73-to-84-months-soar Yikes. I mean, yikes. Please, people...If your rag of a significant other has to drive some fancy $45k+ SUV for her to keep putting out, just lease it. You know she'll want out from under you and that SUV within the next 3-4 years anyway. Just because longer financing terms are available doesn't imply that a more expensive product is now within budget. You're welcome for the free financial advice.
  5. I miss the days when we'd only rail against the media. Now, Twitter makes us hate each other. Why would Ted Cruz even say anything about Elon Musk? How does Ted benefit from throwing shade?
  6. If someone could find the cheapest, SNELL and DOT-certified helmet, I'd appreciate it as well. (Meaning, if you guys say there are $100-150 helmets, please show me one that guys recommend). I've got a Simpson that was expired last track day...
  7. Are we talking about John Oliver? If so, then YES...I love the writing and his comedy on that show. Even dialysis is interesting...
  8. That's very well said, and I would agree 100%. However, if you call your wife a "cunt" on an internet message board, I question the ability for that part of the marriage equation's desire to work it out. I also like how he threw srs shit to start this thread, and has been very quiet since. Brothers and sisters need to work it out. #realtalk
  9. http://jalopnik.com/why-you-should-give-your-car-a-shitty-paint-job-1795704984 Cool article, and an idea that I've kicked around for some of my junk in the past. Would be fun to do and the outcome looks better than some crappy "pro" paint job...
  10. ODOT said that stretch of Rt. 315 between I-670 on the north side of downtown and I-70/71 is actually city-maintained highway. City of Columbus made me file a new claim, which the woman was pleasant enough and online tracking was simple, but this thing was open-shut within a few days. After I got the letter, I went online and saw that my claim was closed within days of being filed.
  11. UPDATE: I received a letter a couple of weeks ago, stating from the City of Columbus that they've closed out my claim and will be denying any reimbursement requests. This 3-page letter outlines that I certainly HAVE the right to request a reimbursement, but they outline the City Reg that says they're not liable for damages to property or people. Of course they arent. The Claims form states submitting TWO written shop estimates on damage costs, insurance info, etc etc...I've been driving the BMW on borrowed wheels/tires but bought a replacement wheel and new tires are on their way (honestly needed them anyway before the blowout). I'm probably going to let this die since I'm not going to be out more than $400 altogether. What DOES piss me off is they keep repairing that stretch of road, and I've seen 2-3 blown tires on the side of the road at more than one occasion that someone keeps getting rid of. Live to fight another day, keep karma on my side? Or, guns-blazing against the city? Paul's "Small Claims Court" reminded me to update this thread.
  12. 11.xx 1/4mi time, on all-seasons. PRICELESS.
  13. +1. Keep 6spd Sportage and SRT. Get a simpler, all-season, 10/10ths-throttle beater that you can get dirty. You'll have fun enough for tearing around town. I do love my 4cyl E36...great little bomber and when things break it's cheap to fix. You'll continue loving the SRT as a toy when you have another vehicle to drive 4-5 days of the week. I like the idea of fixing the X5 - I'm reminded of Tavarish's exploits on YouTube with a $9k SL55 AMG he's wrenching on for cheap - but if it can still be sold for a reasonable amount (relative to a replacement vehicle's cost) then I'd do that. 100k miles is the new 50k...find something that's got 110k'ish miles on it and rock THAT for the next 50-75k miles. 170k miles on the X5 gives me pause. We put 183k miles on our 00' Passat (bought it new) and by that mileage a couple of $500+ fixes made me realize it was time to dump it.
  14. Just wanna share my sympathies for all the CR dads that are going through or have gone through divorce. Just seems like a harsh, harsh way to end things, especially when children are involved. I just don't understand - even from movies and TV - where people can say how much they love their children but then decide that seperate parents are the best thing. If my kids get through college knowing their parents' love and support, then I've done a good job. Sorry for a bit of soapbox there. I do wish the best for OP and everyone else going through this.
  15. I've got some Corroseal...that will neutralize the surface rust. My suggestion (as this is what I'm doing to my Lincoln once out of storage): 1) wire-brush the rust/metal/flaking paint 2) Treat with rust converter 3) light Bondo 4) brush on primer 5) brush on Dr. ColorChip paint. Yes, you'll notice the repairs, but if they are small, brushing eliminates the need to mask for overspray.
  16. Best Cars under $10k, since 2007 http://www.autoblog.com/photos/best-10-year-old-cars-for-less-than-10-000/?icid=autoblog|trend|great-used-cars-for-less-than-$10,000 I'll save you the clickbait, as I was curious: -Acura TL (notbad.jpg) -Chrysler 300 (??? Are you going to put 26"s on it?) -Dodge Magnum (I forget this thing ever existed until I see one on the road) -Ford Escape Hybrid (WTF???) -Honda Civic Si -Jeep Grand Cherokee (Better DD than "fun car") -Mazda Miata -Nissan 350Z -Saab 9-5 -Subaru B9 Tribeca (See Jeep Grand Cherokee) -Volvo C70
  17. Tavarish (Freddy Hernandez) has a YT channel where he's been wrenching on a CraigsList-Special Mercedes SL55 AMG that he got for $8,900. While I'm not stupid to think that there's some things he's not showing for the camera, it's seemed to be a relatively straightforward car to repair as things have started breaking. You are generally right, especially for people who don't wrench. However, the internet can be your friend to repairing these high-mileage luxury cars...
  18. You can't tell me at at least 0.00001% of his decision to marry her was because she matches the tattoo. One less thing to worry about...
  19. Those are cheap prices for some solid BMW's....
  20. I want to take the Lincoln up to Superfly but it's still in storage pending my carport being finished on my property, plus I've got full family weekends already planned out.
  21. When I was in high school, there was a yellow Chevy panel van a few miles from where I lived that had Cragars and "Mad Max"-style zoomie pipes coming out from under the van just in front of the rear wheels. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ZOOMEIS-ZOOMIE-SIDE-PIPES-HEADERS-EXHAUST-HOT-ROD-RAT-ROD-VAN-FORD-CHEVY-/272657777418 It's that visual impression I had many years ago that still reminds me how much I love custom full-size vans.
  22. There used to be some even cooler buildings around that area, but when Columbus was looking into hosting the site of the casino there... http://www.10tv.com/article/columbus-casinos-owners-complete-purchase-arena-district-land The old Jaeger Machine Works and Union Tool and Die buildings had been vacant for years, but I knew a couple of car/photo guys that would use them whenever they could. There were old control panels and equipment that sat unused...just a neat relic to the old manufacturing industry that used to reside in Columbus. They were leveled just after the Recession, when Ohio legislature thought casino revenue would solve the state's income needs. While cool-looking, the buildings were more liabilities than anything. Still...sad to see evidence of our history erased forever. Get more pics in that building while you can.
