If you take your laptop with you a lot of places, I would get a MacBook Air. Personally, I have a 2011 13in MacBook Pro that I like a lot. If you just need to be able to open and edit/create office documents, get OpenOffice.

Yes on the mifi thing. As a matter of fact, there was a carrier at one point selling Mifi's with WiFi iPads. I think it was Sprint. The iPad 1 has a single core A4 processor, the iPad 2 has a dual core A5 processor, along with cameras front and rear and is shaped differently. A few other negligable differences too. I know with AT&T their iPad plans are pay as you go. Can't speak for verizon.

Hard to be Lenovo's for durability, aside from Apple maybe. I've had several Lenovo's, loved all of them. Before I had my MacBook pro, I had a Toshiba L505D, which got the job done, but was an AMD based laptop, and also ran at 1000 degrees constantly. On the whole, stay away from anything AMD based. Dell's current E series laptops (E6320/E6420) are pretty nice, we have been deploying them at work.

A BSOD is rarely a virus. Could be any number of things. If you don't have any data of value on there, try reinstalling Windows and see if that gets you by. We could spend all day trying to isolate and fix the BSOD, reinstalling Windows would be faster.
