  1. how in the hell did something like this even make it on the ballot? I'm assuming the folks that are going to open the casinos had to pay out the ass in bribes to get it that far...

In Ohio you can propose a law or an amendment to the constitution (or both) depending on what you're trying to achieve. The average Ohioan isn't educated enough to know the difference.

In this case, an amendment to our constitution was required to allow casino gambling in Ohio, but this issue was written to not only allow casino gambling but to give this organization sole control over administering it. And you better believe they spent a shitfuck amount of money to lobby and campaign.

Recall our last round of smoking bans we voted on. There were two on the ballot. One was a total ban, a law, which we voted FOR and passed. The other was an amendment to the constitution which would have provided for bars and other similar establishments to always allow smoking which we voted AGAINST and it failed. Had BOTH issues been passed, YOU COULD SMOKE IN BARS even though a law existed forbidding it because the second issue was a constitutional amendment allowing it in bars and constitutional amendments trump law. At any time another constitutional amendment could find it's way onto the ballot to overturn part or all of the law we approved.

  2. Expanded...

By forming this bill as an amendment to the constitution instead of a regular law we have now written exclusive rights to casino gambling in Ohio to this one specific company. Constitutional amendments are extraordinarily difficult to repeal or modify and they trump any law set by any municipality all the way to the State level. Constitution > Law. That means in the future if we wanted to open casino gambling to other organizations, say to introduce competition or to negotiate tax rates we can't without an extraordinary legislative process to reverse this amendment which will never happen. This organization now has a monopoly and can effectively dictate casino policy in Ohio to our lawmakers.

The way this should have been done was a constitutional amendment to allow casino gambling, then a state law to award the contract to this organization.

We just fucked ourselves out of future tax money and benefits by awarding this organization constitutional protection against competition.

  3. I'm going to get a Saab 9-7X and rock a lift kit. ;) Big sticker that says "Redneck Swede" on the front windshield, maybe some Yosemite Sam mudflaps.

I'll check out the site, as I'm also curious if there is a difference btw lifting the 4.2L 6 and the 5.3L V8. Thanks for the info!

Saab 9-7X rules. :) If you're getting one of those, lifting is a bit different in that you'll have to remove the rear air ride. ;)

No difference as far as engines are concerned, same everything.

  4. I was at a bachelor party in NYC a couple of summers ago...We were at a killer hotel in SoHo and I saw a bottle of VOSS next to my bed with a card that said $15 on it. I didn't know what it was, so I told my friend how nice it was to have a small bottle of vodka in our room...he told me it was bottled water and I 'd.

 I love VOSS. Good shit.

  5. God I hope they get it. There was an awesome 10 minute piece on this issue and the hardships it causes for the kids on "Real Sports with Bryant Gumble" yesterday.

They've got it. Like I said, unless a significant anomaly is found, it's in the bag. Barely. But in the bag.

SWCS people, don't put your gear away just yet - projections indicate they'll be back for another levy in four years to try and get back into the "normal" funding zone for a system this size unless significant school funding reform is passed (and it needs passed!). I hope the economy is in better shape and it'll pass easy then because we clearly can't count on our legislature to fix the shit.

  6. The vote for the levy will go to an automatic recount, however I just did a little research on past elections. Currently the levy is PASSING by a margin of 449 votes NOT INCLUDING PROVISIONAL BALLOTS and this is a major reason most news outlets won't call it for SWCS.

    South-Western School District Tax Levy

(WITH 104 OF 104 PRECINCTS COUNTED)

    FOR THE TAX LEVY . . . . . . . . 19,579 50.58

    AGAINST THE TAX LEVY. . . . . . . 19,130 49.42

Looking at the individual vote tallies from each ballot type (from the Franklin BoE) I think it will stay passed unless there’s a major anomaly (fraud, etc.). I looked up the 2008 general (presidential), 2009 primary (May), and 2009 special (August) election results on which a levy failed. In 2008 of 1,868 provisional ballots 1,016 were FOR and 852 AGAINST. In 2009 primary of 235, 155 FOR 80 AGAINST, in 2009 special of 431, 285 were FOR 146 AGAINST. All three elections the provisional ballots leaned significantly FOR and the difference between the totals suggest that if historical trends prove true, provisional ballots will in no way overturn the levy.

Almost time to celebrate a small victory for the kids.

  7. FYI in Ohio the lender can choose to recover damages from you unless explicitly placed in writing that they waive this right; it's usually only done as part of a short sale. If you short sale without the guarantee or foreclose they can come after the full loss on the mortgage. Also, they don't have to short sale. They know your credit information and they'll find out your financial situation. If they have reason to believe you can/should pay they likely will not let you short sale and force you into foreclosure so they can attempt to recover the loss.
  8. Are you worried about wheel bearing wear with 1.5" wheel spacers? Those will put a higher load on the mounting surface...

No, not worried. Most calculations (that I didn't do) show no more than 25% greater wear to any component, which if you assume a 150,000 mile service life would reduce to 112,500 miles. Well within my acceptable risk.

The only other parts of significant consideration are the CV axles. I replaced the axles already last weekend. The greater angle on the inner CV puts stress on the factory rigid plastic boot and causes them to pop, as mine did. The solution is to replace the axles with aftermarket stock replacement Cardone units, they have a neoprene boot instead of hard plastic and they'll take the extra angle without popping. My passenger axle was already leaking and mostly greaseless anyway.

  9. I like it looks good. But I do think it is missing something.

    It needs this guard.....

    and this roof rack

Yea, James Downing is one of the top offroad Trailblazer dudes. I consulted his site and past posts many times as I was choosing components. ;)

If I actually get into offroading I'll pick up a rack, guard, and light bar - but for now it's a snow warrior.
