M1A's are great rifles but they carry a premium price. You can build a plain old Remington 700R .308/.300WSM bolt into a very capable rifle on the cheap. You can find Mauser 8mm or Lee Einfield .303 bolt rifles for next to nothing on Gun Broker.com. Dropping X,XXX on a large bore rifle for fun and not having the experience/training to take advantage of it is a bit like dropping XX,XXX on an exotic and driving the speed limit with it.

How are you going to cause destruction when you can't hit what you intend to destroy? Match grade .308 is still supersonic near 800yards, grain dependant -- .338 is stillo flying at 1000yds. Both will cause destruction - .338 was designed to go through up to 6 layers of Kevlar @ 800+ yards.

I have to ask this so don't take this as offensive - how much experience do you have shooting at 800-1000+ yards? - If you aren't reaching that far, .308 and .338 will suit you much better and with the right shooting skills/rifle, can still be tack drivers at extreme ranges.

There are some high velocity 22LR rounds that are near supersonic at 100 yards with slight drop. It would be plausible to hit a 2"x3" target area with a 1.5-2MOA rifle. If you were really interested in miltia type activities you most likely would be reloading yourself, so you could have a bit of barrel splitting fun with various amounts of powder.

When did flack jackets start covering your face? Namely the notecard sized area around the eyes, where a bullet has a very easy path of entry and will disable your motor reflexes, sending you to the ground without even a chance to signal your mates you're taking enemy fire.
