Fourstring - Thanks. And yes the DSM community for the most part is very helpful and nice. Hpfiend - I am not sure on the race gas yet. I want to do it on pump. The driveability thing is kind of an opinion I guess. It will have an upgraded clutch and flywheel. Do I think it will make it less driveable? No. My Evo is 100% daily driver car. I drive to work, the store, with my kids. It has an upgraded clutch that some people might not like though. I might just be used to it now.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, higher displacement CAN be better, but I'll take a smaller more volumetrically efficient engine any day. If you paid too much for parts, yes it would be over 5k in parts. The nice thing is so many people start these projects and don't finish them that parts can be found for dirt cheap. This whole thing started because I said I thought DSMs were the best BUDGET performance car. I still think they are. Are there better cars out there? Ofcoarse. Could someone build a different car faster for less money? Sure, given the right circumstances. My only point was that these cars are everywhere. They are a dime a dozen. You can buy the car cheap, you can buy the parts cheap, and if you spend the time there is TONS of proven info on how to make them fast. My intent was never to convince you to ditch your Mustang and buy one of these. If there were a competition where I was given 5 grand and told to make a fast car, I would start with a 1st gen DSM.

edit: you are right, anything making that kind of power can and will have some failures. A good clutch and pre-loading the drivetrain = no shit broken. Shock destroys drivetrains. Preloading eliminates that shock. You also have to have a good feel for the car. If you feel like its going to start wheel hopping, let out and give up on the run. Yes Doug, we did learn a lot the hard way.... I know we did stupid shit, but we never blamed the failures on the platform. I know it was all my stupid ass fault. Don't be scared of the launches buddy, the one we did the other day is how we are doing er from now on. I think Bill will be able to do it after a few trys.

You could always try $35 if you sign up by x date (whenever the track needs the money), $45 after. Even if it made everyone sign up by that date, you would only need $5 x 60, so $300 from a sponsor to setup shop at the event that day. Someone would hop on that. Just an idea....

I like the project, not knocking that a bit. I just think that they made it out like it did 0-60 in 3 seconds and got 110 mpg in the same form. That, I don't buy. 0-60 in 3 seconds is FAST. In comparison an Enzo Ferarri does it in 3.3

If that car gets 100 mpg and does 0-60 in 3.0 seconds or less without the use of an electrical motor I will eat my keyboard. The fact that they are using E85 just makes it more puzzling, as it takes more E85 to make power than gas. E85 is capable of producing more power, but you usually have to use roughly 30% more fuel.
