  2. If EBD is meant to keep the car straight, what's the point of ABS, which allows full control during a brake slam? Seems I'm hijacking my own thread
  3. Mine does, but I have absolutely no clue what that really means.
  4. Thanks for the comments, gang! Only one person over there made the size-difference observation. Our HCH's don't have traction control of any sort, though we do have ABS, so apart from the basic speedometer, what good do wheel speed sensors do? If I ever have to use the doughnut, should I expect the same wierdness this guy had? And no, Sigman, I've still got all four of my OEM's, hopefully for another 30k
  5. You know I can't tell ya that now that you're working for the Empire :: waves hand :: These aren't the price books you're looking for....
  6. Just a note... the eBay description has it wrong. It's 1000VA/700W. There's a difference between apparent power and real power, and you need to stay underneath both limits. With home gear, you *usually* run out of VA before you run out of watts, but it's something to be aware of. My gripe now made, I'll flat out say that $250 is more than just a steal for one of these. It's highway robbery, and if Mensan sees this, he'll agree (after dissing it of course, since he's now working for the evil competitor )
  7. Hoping one of the officers here can send this up their chain, or poke whoever needs to be poked. On Riverside northbound, just before the zoo, there's a speed limit sign posted dropping the limit from the country club on to 45mph. There's a matching 45mph sign southbound between the uber-nasty turn after the reservoir and before Powell Rd, and a 50mph sign at the country club Here's my beef... There are no further speed limit signs northbound all the way to US 42, but if you're on 42 and turn south on Riverside, there's a 55mph sign maybe 100ft in. SO... is that entire stretch therefore 55mph, and the northbound folks get screwed, or is there more than one missing sign somewhere?
  8. That assumes the drive even spins up and is visible to the BIOS, neither of which were true in this case. Knoppix (like SpinRite before it) is not the magic silver bullet of the dead hard drive world.
  9. Yes, the ZipLock bag is very important to the freezer. If you can pull a vacuum (even with a straw) before sealing it, even better.
  10. I've seen an earlier report about this, but the car is new. Very sweet, love to get my hands on the actual patents to see how it works. The 2H2O > 2H2 + O2 process is fairly easy (and you probably saw it in high school), but the energy out versus energy in wasn't exactly favorable. Could be economies of scale, but I'm going to remain a skeptic for now
  11. Car in question is an '06 HCH like mine in San Antonio, TX. I don't see anything about traction/stability control on the window sticker of mine, but there is 'electronic brake distribution', whatever that is.
  12. Over on the hippie boards, this message came through a little while ago: I'm left wondering... can a mismatched tread really do that? I'd certainly be willing to accept that if the two tires weren't balanced, that this sort of thing would happen, but *assuming* they were (which they probably weren't, given that the shop gave a mismatched tire to begin with), could the tread alone cause that, or was something else going on?
  13. Paperwork sucks, but there's nothing that says you have to accept what the aid office offers based on the FAFSA. Besides, if it gets you even a small grant, isn't it worth it?
  14. Yep. Pretty freaky, when you think about it. Personally, though, 9/14 stands out more, since it was the day a 767 went blasting directly overhead on takeoff from BWI as I drove into work. I think the pilots that day were intentionally running their engines harder/louder as a sort of "you're not gonna win" protest. Unfortunately, I don't feel the least bit safer now than I did back then.
  15. Don't underestimate Lesko. He's annoying as all hell, but the programs are real, and often the money goes left unclaimed. FAFSA (as mentioned) gets you in the school's system for various need-based programs (not that it helped me, all they wanted to offer was a $500 unsubsidized loan a quarter because I'm male from a white middle-class family). The school's aid office also has access to a crapload of grants and scholarships that, like the gov't programs Lesko digs up, often go un-awarded. Also go looking for a book in the library (forget what it's called ) and sites like fastweb.com and scholarships.com that offer free database searching. There's stuff out there with crackpot requirements like "german heritage with the middle name 'augustus'."
  16. I was having the same problem a bit earlier. Doing a "ipconfig /flushdns" from the command line, followed by a total reboot of my modem and computer got stuff going again.
  17. WTF is up with that shit? I can understand if you're going too slow on a freeway, but 25mph is a residential limit, where who knows when a dumbass kid is going to jump out chasing their runaway puppy. And points??? Should have gone to court just on the principle of the thing and done the "Your honor, think of the children" schtick. I'll bet the judge would laugh that cop out of the room if they even showed.
  18. Couldn't get them below MSRP ($22k), mostly because they knew if I walked, they would sell it within a week anyway. Ended up being $24 by the time tax, title, and accessories were added.

  20. I'll betcha one of my coworkers is worse, but won't be able to find out until he gets back next week.
  21. Sigh... and despite this, Nationwide *STILL* wanted $100/mo to insure my unriceable wheels. GEICO ftw!
  22. 99:1 says that cat isn't getting adopted anytime soon.
  23. You think that's freaky, check out this shit: http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KCMH
  24. That kid's just like "uhh... whuaaa.... ooookaayyyy." I vaguely recall having roughly the same reaction to my 9th grade physical science teacher.
