  1. Dude, if your nut hurts, see a doctor. Could be anything from full blown testicular cancer (in which case we'll expect you to get chemo then win the Tour de France seven years straight), to something totally lame like a hydrocele (where a pocket of water develops and pushes against a nerve). Yeah, might be embarassing to see a doc, but that's what they're there for.
  2. Question for the self-maintenance guys... where do you take waste fluids that *aren't* oil (which I can just take to gas stations)? I'm talking things like transmission, radiator, and that sort of stuff.
  3. Lookin' good... mind if I ask how much? Getting some tint is one of the things I'm pondering on my batterymobile to keep it a little cooler before switching over to the a/c.
  4. Translation for those of us who have no clue about underlying cell-phone tech/regs?
  5. I'd also give a suggestion to the old-style hardware stores.. think Zettler's (one on Hard and Smoky Row), Ace, or True-Value.
  6. Complete rubbish. It was true, once long long ago, that powering a computer on and off would significantly accelerate the wearing down of components (hard drives in particular). It still is, to some extent. It's also true that there's about a half-second surge of power as everything charges and spins up. However, it's nothing compared to the amount of juice you'd waste just letting it sit there all week. Turn the sucker off. Or put it into sleep/hibernate mode at the very least.
  7. Remember to check sites like newegg and cyberguys for cables. You can usually find piece-parts like these, fans, and whatnot for a lot cheaper there since they don't have nearly the overhead of the big box retailers.
  8. Yech... I've been in the same 1004sq.ft. apartment for about two years now, all electric (heat, water, a/c, and cooking) and my bills have never been that high. Worst ever in summer was $82, and worst winter was $83. Average across two years is $60, and there have been four times under $45. Anyways, here are some things to look for and/or think about: 1. Whenever a light burns out, replace it with a CFL. The only exceptions to this are ceiling fans (vibration) and lights in hot places (ovens, dryers). If there's a female involved, you may want to stick with regular bulbs in the bathroom as well. 2. Turn down the heat and a/c. Mine is set to 78 in summer, and 64 in winter. Every extra degree you can tolerate is money in your pocket. It's cheaper to throw on a sweatshirt than heat the whole apartment. Same logic when you're asleep. Electric blankets for the win. 3. If you have access to them, make sure your ducts aren't spewing hot/cold air into empty spaces. I had an apartment in Baltimore where the duct exiting the unit was broken inwards, causing at least a third of the air to be wasted into the world instead of going into my apartment. 4. Use plastic sheets w/ double-sided tape over your windows to keep out drafts. Take the time to apply it properly, including shrinking it with a hair dryer. 5. If you're not using something, turn it off. Computers in particular are great at chewing up power just sitting idle.
  9. Both have the "usual" suspects... video, sound, network, usb, cdrom. The p-166 is a pci video w/ 1G drive, the p2-300 is first generation agp w/ 6G drive. Good for email and netsurfing, not so much the Halo and Unreal. I'm off work each monday this month, so if you want to get together for a bar lunch or something, lemme know through pm. I think a mod can kindly lock this now, unless they're too under-powered for ya
  10. Works for me. Any pieces/parts/cards you'd like me to include should I have them handy?
  11. Throwing this here since "free to a good home" is an option, but does anyone know a place I can take a pair of old computers for recycling? One's a Pentium-166, the other a Pentium2-300. Both are still fully functioning, and would make decent openbsd firewalls or maybe a linux toys. I just don't have the time or space to work with them anymore, and they're too old for Computer Renaissance to be interested in.
  12. Is this the "next generation" astroturf type stuff, that's still totally synthetic, but has the plastic grass blade and stuff so you wear cleats and such just like regular grass, but don't have to mow it?
  13. qft. Last winter, I had someone try to dash in front of me, turning left from Powell onto Riverside by the zoo. Don't know what they were on to think they'd have made it even in good weather, but in that morning's slop ,they got about four feet and started doing a slow doughnut. Good thing I had ABS on that car, or I probably would have sent that genius to the hospital.
  14. ok, someone care to explain to me how i can check out every bloody video here (including Linn's nasty ones) and not see something less than three days old? sheesh. someone get me some alcohol
  15. Good luck seeing anything like this here in the states: http://5x5m.com/files/speedbandits/speedbandits.swf
  16. Yep. Both. With one of these. Gawd how I miss ball with my CTown buds.
  17. Sorry man... best I can suggest is throwing search terms at google and hoping someone wrote a review using the words you picked.
  18. Aww, come on. Only 47mpg? I know what that sucker needs... ONE POINT TWENTY-ONE JIGAWATTS!!!!
  19. Well, given that we're just (supposedly) evolved monkeys, sex in trees is a perfectly natural thing to do
  20. I'll have to go back and look at the specs, but I'm pretty sure a Prius would lose to my Civic
  21. Swing state again pretty much describes us. There's a bunch of ® incumbents not sitting very pretty right now, and the advertisements have gotten quite nasty. Too bad they want me to elect Ralph Nader so he can give us the "None of the above" option he's always harping on about.
  22. What kind of current, though? There are a number of 110 plugs beyond the usual wall socket (aka NEMA 5-15R2).
  23. Curious as to the most common type(s) of electrical hook-up on heaters. NEMA 5-15P? L6-20P? Some ass-backwards proprietary shit? Same goes for EV cars when they were around (Chevy's EV1 comes to mind, there may be others). I've had.... a thought.
