The new tech regs are going to make things very interesting for us gearheads. The cars are no longer powered by "engines". Instead, because KERS is such an integrated part, they're now called "Power Units" in the tech regs.
At the basic level, most have heard what the core of the unit will be; a Turbo V6 at 1.6L. And as above, the RPM limit will be dropped again from 18K to 15K (up from 12K in the original proposed rules). But what's REALLY interesting is how they're limiting power from the turbo. There are no boost restrictions! Instead, they are limiting fuel flow. Maximum allowed fuel flow is ramped from (IIRC) 40 lph, to a maximum of 100lph.
Here's the kicker, the fuel tank will only hold 100l and there is no refueling in F1 now. So at full power, the car will run out of fuel halfway through the race!
Now KERS is getting a big change as well. First off, the electric motors will be able to deliver around twice the power as they currently do (around 200hp) and can be used up to 30 seconds in a single lap. Additionally, power will be able to be harvested in two ways. Through the wheels like now, but also from turbo (which is what you're seeing in the picture above) essentially harvesting heat energy from the exhaust.
I'm not sure if the FIA will allow the generator on the turbo to act as anti-lag under acceleration...
But, like the turbo/fuel delivery, there's a catch! The driver will only be able to harvest HALF a full charge per lap. So for the full 30 second boost, they'll have to go a lap without using KERS.
The changes in 2014 will mean the driver will have a LOT more to do. Not only is he dealing with piloting a F1 car which is a challenge in itself (just see the Top Gear episode where Hammond tries to drive one) but the driver will also have to manage his resources available. How much power to dial in, and when to harvest vs using KERS. Is it worth saving KERS for a big push next lap? Or use a half charge to maintain your lap time? Turn the boost up for some fast laps, or keep it low for more consistent laps?
"Yes, Yes. I know what I'm doing!"
